Good job, Mabel! I charted (badly, but good enough for me to use) the canvas work piece I did ages ago for the Edinburgh exhibition. Couldn't have managed without it. Such an obvious and useful tool.

OK, it's still not on the actual canvas, but at least I've sampled it in the charted version with several green blends :-)

It's getting closer to the actual canvas, I guess? Can't you make changes once you start the actual canvas if you don't like the way something looks?
It's not quite like cutting the wrong threads on a Hardanger, I would think. It looks really difficult to me.

Yes, unlike with the cutting in Hardanger it is actually possible to unpick and restitch an element, although if it is surrounded by a lot of other ones it gets a bit tricky - unlike in other forms of embroidery, you work the front elements first and fill in around it, so if it's got lots of little stitches tucked up against it I wouldn't want to tamper with it anymore :-). At my class tomorrow I hope to put the bud in "for real",and possibly also make a start on the large pink tulip that I did a chart for.

Over the past two months I've been getting more at ease with canvaswork, and - marvel of marvels - have actually stitched on the proper piece! These are the elements that are on it at the moment, not in chronological order but in the order of how pleased/proud I am :-) . I'll also put FoF links by the pictures for those who'd like to read a bit more about the whole process.

:applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce: Absolutely beautiful! The closeups show how intricate and difficult this stitching seems to be. I love the colors you are using and I was going to say what my favorite one is, except I keep changing my mind. I’ve been following it on FoF while we were gone and find this a fascinating project. Looking forward to more updates.

Wow, so many different stitches!

The texture of the stitches is so interesting and the colours are so beautiful, this is going to spectacular when fully stitched.

Thank you for the very interesting reads on FoF too.

Mabel, we knew you are so talented, but this is something else. I'm glad you feel proud of these, you absolutely should.

Well done indeed.

Wow, Mabel!
I spent a happy time yesterday catching up on FoF.
I really enjoyed your detailed pictures and description of the stitches and how you achieve the shading and depth.
Wonderful.
I particularly liked the areas of couching between the 'petals'. So clever. :applesauce:

After a mere seven and a half months  I have finally attended a Canvaswork class again! (As always detailed report in FoF, together with some previous samplings and stitchings)

The result? one bush...

Quite a bushy bush :-D especially as I'm not allowed to trim the loop stitches yet:

Also did some sampling for the very dark background blobs and a couple of the large leaves (the arrows point to a very small light bit for which I found just the right stitch)

And here is what the project looks like at the moment:

The idea of making a stitching "bundle" is brilliant. :applesauce:

So good to see this update and I'm looking forward to watching this. This seems like one of the more complicated skills you are learning, but also one of the more beautiful ones. The detailed explanation in FoF was great and it is also been a pleasure to be able to read these again!

Oh my gosh, this looks so complicated.

The different techniques are so effective and the stitching is so so beautiful.

After reading (and thoroughly enjoying Tanya Bentham's book) I am more aware of how the light is so important in the stitches and how it affects the whole look of the piece, and you are doing this brilliantly.

I've bookmarked FoF to read later on this afternoon :D

During the months of May and June, my entire output consisted of a small roof. Today I unpicked it....

And restitched it. And did the rest of the hut (a little too narrow, but I'm leaving it like that). And the second bush. Yay, progress!
