Serindë's 2022 Stitching Adventures 24 Dec

Post by Serinde »

At my stitching group on Tuesday, when they found me surrounded by brightly coloured felt, shiny ribbon, buttons and beads, one of my compatriots correctly observed, "You're certainly out of your comfort zone." How true. However, needs must, for a craft page in the local newspaper. However, I did what I could. It's meant to be a bit "folks-y", thank goodness.

They may be out of your comfort zone but they look great fun! And recognisably a bunny and egg and a fowl!

PS I see you have gained your umlaut in the title!

I had fun with those figures. But I was also working on this! Started this Faby Reilly design about a fortnight before Christmas, so no hope of finishing it for this year, anyway. The back will just have the outline and a (real) large gold ribbon. Then it's just stitching them together and stuffing. I seem to be doing a lot of that!

I'm just imagining how lovely it will be as a padded ornament dangling from its gold ribbon on the tree. :applesauce:

My first sample for sashiko (thanks to an extraordinarily well-run in-house Strathendrick Stitchers workshop). The stitches at the top of the piece aren't exactly "rice size", and I did experiment with long stitches, too. By the bottom I sort of got the notion. But it's surprisingly difficult not to make your running stitch the roughly the same size on the right and wrong sides! I had access to proper sashiko thread (about the same diameter as 6-stranded thread) and special needle, which made it a bit easier.

The bits of indigo fabric are there as possible edges... but I don't think they'll work for various reasons. Unless I also tackle boro stitching, of course... oh, dear.

Interesting, so it's like running stitch but with more of the thread on the front than on the back?

That's very interesting. :D

Always surprises me just how many different disciplines there are for stitching!

I like the indigo fabrics too, maybe the stripes would work with this? :thinks:

I agree. I need a few more lifetimes and need to start my stitching at a much earlier age than I did so I can learn all the things I want to  . In the meantime it is so much fun to see all these different methods/styles/disciplines being used so beautifully. I think :thinks: the stripes are an intersection choice too.

It is exactly running stitch. But the idea is to only pick up the smallest amount of fabric between stitches. I think it started out life in Japan as a way of sandwiching and mending cloth, so there are also similarities with darning. Less need for patching and repairing has meant fancier designs, I suppose. It is very therapeutic, however. For more, see here.

I looked up boro as well when looking at the site you linked to. I'm not sure how to put this, but isn't it just a fancy name for rather untidy mending? (With the best of intentions - don't waste things - but still, rather untidy mending.) It reminds me of an old Dutch dish called "hangop" (yoghurt left to drain to make it thick and creamy) which people now insist on calling "labneh" because that sounds more exotic :thinks:

Boro doesn't do much for me, but that's because I prefer the Western pattern darning which can accomplish the same thing but is pretty on the surface with all the edges hidden. (I'm sure there's a psychological truth there somewhere...). But Sashiko is very elegant, I think, and lends itself to all sorts of pattern-making.

In any case, I've just ordered a sampler, thread and needles... resisting other interesting thing (stencils, eg) until I know I'm really interested in pursuing this.
