It is striking how all the landmarks all have a neoclassical Architectural Style.

A great finish! I like the way the blossoming trees are dotted around, softening the straight lines and echoing the curved ones in the architecture.

Mabel and Jo, you are so much more observant than I am. I notice the pretty colors and you notice architecture and design elements. Well, that led me down a rabbit hole, so here is a map to show where each element is within D.C., along with a history lesson. Sorry…I’m a history geek.



1. Jefferson Memorial - It was built in the neoclassical style, with construction starting in 1939. It was completed in 1943, but the statue of Jefferson was not completed until 1947.

2. The Capitol - Built in the neoclassical style, construction began in 1793, and since then it has been built, burned, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Why was it burned? During the War of 1812, the Americans burned the Canadian capital at York (Toronto). British troops descended on Washington, D.C., in 1814, setting fire to much of the city.

3. Washington Monument - The cornerstone was laid in 1848 and the capstone was set in 1885. It opened in 1888. There’s not much else to say; it’s an obelisk.

4. Smithsonian Museum of Natural History - Construction started in 1904 and was completed in 1911. Today, it has an overall 1.5 million square feet, with 325,000 square feet dedicated to exhibitions and public space.

5. Tidal Basin - It was built in the 1800’s to harness the power of the tides in the Potomac River to flush silt and sediment from the Washington Channel. Water from the Tidal Basin is also used (via a pumping system) to maintain water levels in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

6. The White House - It designed by an Irish-born architect in the neoclassical style, modeled on Leinster House in Dublin. Construction took place between 1792 and 1800.

7. Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pond - It was constructed between 1922 and 1923, after the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. The Washington Monument is on the east end and the Lincoln Memorial on the west.

8. Lincoln Memorial - Built in the neoclassical style and in the form of a classical temple with Doric style columns, it was started in 1914 and dedicated in 1922.

9. Francis Scott Key Bridge - Known as the Key Bridge, it opened in 1923. It spans the Potomac River and connects Rosslyn, Virginia, to the Georgetown neighborhood of D.C.

I picked this up at the framer (Hobby Lobby) today. I had the idea to have the Metro map framed with it and I am over the moon with the result.
