Luverrr.

[In Devon 'Alright, Me Luv' or 'Alright, Me Luverrr' is a common greeting, though there are many, many dialect problems if you're new to Devon. If youm no' shure 'bout they language, lookee see a' they vidyo yur to be see-en 'ow bad em ken geht: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1662411490472173. ]

I shall now revert to English as 'Devon' isn't really understood outside the South West. It's suggested that 'Devon' is a relic of old Anglo Saxon. It may be, same as Cornish is a relic of one of the old Celtic languages that were in Britain prior to the Anglo-Saxon takeover of England. However, it's strange how little of the Devon dialect includes Cornish words, same as it's surprising how distinct Cornish genomes are from Devon genomes. Somerset is fairly distinct from the rest of England too, but it's more distinct from Devon than it is from the rest of England, indicating more mixing from England than Devon or Cornwall. Time & mixing between peoples seems to have gone very slowly in the South West.
My great-grandfather was a bit of a Cornish Separatist, believing that Cornwall was so distinct from England that it should be a separate country. He has since been vindicated in some ways in that Cornish genetics have their own markers not found in England & vice versa. However, Cornwall isn't really viable as a separate country, as he well knew. Nonetheless, that didn't stop him from giving all his male descendants the middle name of 'Washington' after a successful American Separatist and we've passed the name on to our youngest daughter as we have no sons and didn't want the tradition to run into the ground.

Regards,

Richard.

I'm sure she is very grateful.... DH got lumbered with his mother's maiden name as a middle name, so that whenever I pick up his meds from the chemist I have to remind them that no part of "Fane de Salis" is in fact his last name.

Pygmalion

[Really love the film version 'My Fair Lady', but the play has a one word title..

Youngest daughter rather likes having Washington as a middle name. We broke her initials up with an 'F' to avoid spelling any words, inspiring nicknames or having people accidentally hyphenate the last two initials (as sometimes happens with my dad & I - sounds very posh when it happens, but it's not us). When very young Orianna thought her middle two initials spelt 'Wash Your Face', which was actually quite appropriate at the time. ]

Pact

[Always reminds me of a Toyah Song I still enjoy hearing The Packt. It's really for 4 voices, but plays quite effectively with one. The lyrics can be a bit difficult to hear and are here: https://www.google.com/search?q=toyah+t ... s-wiz-serp

Racket

(In our the main part of our Library you can barely hear yourself shout given how busy it is. It's nice to see so many people & their kids using it, but it's really not a nice place for quiet study. It gets even worse in one of the quieter areas when the 'Craft & Chat' crew invades every other Saturday morning).

Toes (as in Heads, shoulders knees and toes - sorry not sorry - I did a 15 yr stint in childcare. I can still recite some books by heart despite having been out of Childcare for 5 years)

Shoes

(To be honest I was also thinking of the Nursery Rhyme, having had to go through it many, many times with my young daughters.)
