What's the difference between these threads?

Post by Serinde »

I have taken possession of a large box of embroidery stuff, in which are lots of lovely things, but mostly items I'll take to my stitchers group tomorrow.

Can someone tell me about "soft embroidery cotton"? I have two kinds, it seems: a 4-ply, matt thread made by Anchor and clearly meant to be used without splitting. It's about 1mm thick; and a 5-ply DMC version. Neither are the same as coton a broder (which I have for comparison). What I've so far found on the innertubes hasn't been very helpful. please?

I've used soft cotton (both Anchor and DMC) for making friendship bracelets with the Sunday School children, as padding for goldwork, and - very important - it will be used for the windmill on my Canvaswork. Yes, it is used as it comes. It is rather thick for cross stitch unless on binca (which reminds me I once put together initial cross stitch kits for a friend to take on a well-digging and school-building trip to Sierra Leone, that was soft cotton and Binca - the children loved it, especially the boys!) but very good for canvaswork (it looks good in Florentine patterns). It can also be couched down, singly or in pairs of threes.

Oh, and I don't think there is any difference except in the number of plies (which I will admit I'd never noticed)

No, not yet. I'd like to use them on my 2024 daily stitch but I can't figure out how to make them take them out of their wrapper an make them into useable skeins. I have this vision of knots and more knots.
