a small crochet doily
I made this last month, with a #30 crochet thread, a sort of pumpkin colour.

That is so pretty. I've never tried crochet like this, does it take a long time to complete?

Re: a small crochet doily
Crochet is on my list of ´must learn to do´because I have always loved crochet pieces. The old lady across the road agreed to teach me when I first moved here 2 years ago but she is very deaf and has become less and less able so this will not now happen. My daughter and I tried to teach ourselves from a book but only had one evening to learn when she was staying so this was of limited success.
Is it possible to learn on your own or do you really need to be shown how to do it?
Absolutely love the doily, it is so delicate looking and such a different colour.

Very pretty
Re: a small crochet doily
thanks for the comments! this is just one of many doilies I've made, and I've started 2 more, one is almost finished and the other I just started on.
I learned to crochet at school when I was 13; we had to go to after-school classes, and in this one, we had to choose: either knit or crochet. I just learned the basic stitches back then: chain, single and double crochet. After that, I was "hooked", and taught myself everything else.
I never found it difficult to learn, but it takes a bit of practise to get the right tension.
In regards to the doily in the photo, it tooke me about a week and a half, but then I only crochet at night, whilst watching TV. (during the day I cross stitch ) I have a stack of magazines with patterns for doilies like that; I think it was called "Magic Crochet" in english. There is a website that specializes in this type of designs, here's the link:

Re: a small crochet doily
rosemary: I would advise to get a largish hook, maybe a #4 , and some yarn that isn't too thick, maybe a worsted weight type. (I really don't know the names to types of yarns.) Practice on that, it's much easier than starting with something fine as crochet thread.
basically, crochet is just one stitch: a loop. You have to start out with the yarn tied around the hook, this is the starting loop.
just remembered, http://www.anniesattic.com" target="_blank" target="_blank also has a stitch library, maybe it can help.

Re: a small crochet doily
My MIL got me a starter box to start crocheting a few christmases ago, but we haven't really had time to sit down and learn. She actually told me that it was easier for her to learn with the crochet thread because she could see the "stitches" better than with yarn. To each her own I guess. I tried to teach myself from the book a couple of times, but I think I was too distracted to actually apply myself to it. I would love to make doilies like that!

Re: a small crochet doily
When I was teaching my classes I told the ladies and a few gentlemen the same thing that Hada said. Start with a medium size hook and the regular 4 ply yarn and not one of the specialty threads as they are hard to work with as a beginner. I have been crocheting for 30 plus years and love the speed and all of the amazing patterns that you can do. It is so fun to crochet a blanket, doiley, or doll. Almost as much fun as cross stitch both of them are so interesting to me.
If you are looking for some one to help change you, look in the mirror
Re: a small crochet doily
Maybe I need to change what I'm learning with....after all of the christmas projects are done.

Re: a small crochet doily
Thank you so much Hada and Rose for the encouragement and lesson. I have indeed tried to do it with the finer crochet thread and struggled with putting the hook through so guess that this will be much easier with wool and a larger hook.
I will concentrate on learning in the New Year.

Re: a small crochet doily
That's VERY pretty - and so neat! I used to do a bit of crochet years ago, but got started on doing other things and it sort of got pushed out. I used to like filet crochet, and making crochet roses.
