Mini Projects 2010

Post by Rose »

I like the idea of mini projects being by year so this is the start of this one although itis 2 months late starting.

But maybe it is our forums "April Fools Day"......you all do know why April 1 is called Fools Day right..... :thinks:

no, absolutely no idea :thinks: :thinks: :thinks:

:-)

I finished a little experiment over the weekend, it uses DMC linen threads on 26ct raw linen -- it's the design I used for the very first ATC, only that was on 36ct so this has come out bigger. The darker of the two blues doesn't show up very well in the picture :-(, but the project was useful because it gave me a chance to try out the linen threads for the first time, and they're not as bad as i thought they'd be! (I had some Danish linen threads which I bought in a charity shop, and they were terrible to work with!)

Anyway, to get the new Mini Projects Thread going, here it is:

Such a shame the darker blue didn't show up as well as expected. It's still very pretty though - I love it. :)

I started stitching the bookmark kit that came free on Cross Stitch Crazy this morning as a quickie Mothers' Day gift for my Mam. So, there'll be another pic here from me within the next few days too. ;)

One likely theory is that the modern holiday was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar; the term referred to someone still adhering to the old Julian Calendar, which it replaced. Another possible origin lies in the fact that when King Charles IX of France officially changed the first day of the year from April 1 to January 1, some of his subjects continued using the old system. So were called Fool's and the Day was called All Fool's Day.

In Holland we celebrate April Fool (simply known as "1 April" -- and as it happens to be my birthday I always got a lot of it!) but a different reason got attached to it. When the Spanish were occupying us and the rebels fought them, a duke called Alva lost the town of Den Briel to the rebels on 1 April (remembered by Dutch school children with the rhyme "op 1 April verloor Alva z'n bril", which means "on April 1st Alva lost his glasses", playing on the similarity between "bril" and "Briel"), and perhaps because they took the town from him when it was almost undefended, it became an occasion for practical jokes.
(One birthday, when I'd been ill rather a lot in the year leading up to it, my grandmother gave me a tube of aspirine tablets wrapped up as a birthday present. On further inspection it turned out to be full of "dubbeltjes", 10-cent coins)

I'm working on a whole lot of mini projects this week. I've finished stitching one Xmas card design (just got to make up the card), but I'm also working on:

- A Mothers' Day card for my Grom
- A Mothers' Day bookmark for my Mam
- A blackwork piece for an exchange
- A Xmas card design
- Two jingle cubes for twin girls

Phew!

I'll post pics as and when they're all finished.

Beautiful work Mabel  :applesauce: I love the softness of those pinks and greens - we had those exact colours for our wedding, so I have a very soft spot for them.

I finished the design for my Grom's Mothers' Day card this morning while Xan napped, so once I've assembled the card tonight I'll post a pic. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. :)

A birthday card for my Father-in-law who turns 76 today. He lives in Germany so a Black Forest cake seemed appropriate!
