Canvas Work

Post by Unfinished »

I recently went to a stitch and craft show at the NEC and found some canvas work kits. I'd not done this type of stitching before but I love it and the results are quick... so quick in fact I actually finished it! (unheard of for me, nearly everything is consigned to the UFO pile at some point or another  )

I really love the detail in it

I think several people on the forum bought these at the show - from West End Embroidery? It looks stunning completed and having seen this it's now definitely on my wish list

OK, I know I will sound really ignorant (because I am), but can you please tell me what type of canvas is used? And what thread? Wouldn't these patterns work on "normal" evenweave with "normal" thread?
They are so beautiful, and some of the stitches look very similar to the speciality stitches I have already tried and liked a lot so I was just wondering how different this is.

Agi the canvas is different because the threads are woven and fused together where they cross so that the floss can not slide between (hope that this makes sence) The floss is silk, stranded cotton, and very fine braid. :D

Canvas designs have really come a long way, haven't they. These examples are stunning. And beautifully stitched, too. :applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce:

Thanks all for your kind comments.

Hi Agi, that's not a silly question at all. I think this works better on canvas (same as you would use for some tapestry) because the canvas is more rigid. Some of the stitches are so long that I think it would be hard to keep the tensions right if you were sewing on a softer fabric although it could be worth a try. All the smaller stitches are definitely similar and the thread is no different to what is used on evenweave etc.
If I remember rightly you can just purchase the patterns rather than the whole kit if you prefer so maybe it's worth seeing if there's one that really takes your eye and trying it on a different medium.
