I think for most samplers, you can use Aida if you want. It might be harder to do fractionals, but a nice sharp needle can easily pierce Aida threads. Your tension looks fine to me. Actually, when I first saw it, it looks tight. I think for afghans, loose tension is okay since tighter tension will make the afghan hard. Just my opinion
I used to hate so much the re-threading of needles until I used needle threaders and my homemade needle organizer. Now it's easier specially with those blended/tweeded threads.
