Did you mean it said 'should not put knots'? Hope so.

There are 2 ways to secure the thread when you start. One is to leave a short tail in the back, then make sure your next stitches secure it as you go along. Another way is to thread your needle with the two ends together, take your first stitch from the back and leave a small loop showing. When you go back through, put your needle through the loop and pull snug. That secures your thread. To secure your thread when you are coming to the end of a length, run your needle under three or four stitches, pull snug and clip the thread.

Hope this makes sense!

There are lots of websites that explain how to stitch. The one below shows the basics, including a good diagram of the start I tried to describe above, as well as how to stitch on even weave.

Good luck!

Hi
First it is best not to start with a knot as this can make the back very lumpy. there are 2 usual ways to start
http://www.crossstitchforum.com/viewtop ... f=3&t=5471" target="_blank" target="_blank scroll down to Threadbears entry and there should be a video

2) You put the needle through the material from the back leaving a length of thread and when you do the first few stitches you just make sure that you stitch over the length of thread at the back to secure it.
If you have already done some stitching you can weave the needle through the back of some of the stitches that you have already done.

If you are talking about fastening off I just run the needle under 4-6 stitches approx sometimes I then go back on one of the stitches as well but not always

Evenweave can be used by making crosses over a single block of thread 1 over 1 If it is 28ct evenweave and you want to stitch over 2 blocks 2 over 2 your finished piece will come out the same size as if you used 14ct aida

Hope this helps

I always knotted my threads to both start and finish. Since I heard about the loop method from the wonderful people here, I use it all the time to start my threads. DH has even started using it on his stitching and finds it so much easier. Honestly, do whatever works best for you.
