I'm in the middle of setting everything up for my next project - TW's 12 days of Christmas. The plan is to make them into Christmas ornaments and the chart in fact suggests this. I've never made anything into ornaments before and the problem is that in the limited instructions given in the chart for finishing, they don't answer some fairly key questions.
My major one is how much fabric allowance should I give around each ornament for finishing? They're 3.57" square. Should I give a 1 inch allowance or more or less?
Also, I get the idea of backing fabric and stuffing with batting but all the instructions say is sew the backing fabric to the stitched piece. For the new ornament maker there's a fairly glaring issue here - what stitch should you use? I was thinking back stitch would work, much as is done with knitting. Is this right or should I use some other stitch?
All help gratefully received - I'm itching to start
I would not use less than 1" all round, and the Christmas Ornament issue of Just Cross Stitch suggest the usual 3 inches or so all round. Much depends on how you want to finish the ornament. Once you have decided that, then you will know how much extra each ornament will require. (Ornaments always take up a lot of fabric!)
Many thanks Serinde. I'm planning on finishing them just as simple stuffed ornaments, not padded or anything. Fortunately I got plenty of fabric for them, so think will experiment a bit. Not sure I'll get 12 done for Christmas, but hopefully there'll be two or three on the tree
What I plan to do is to make a small pillow really as in the last one rather than get card, attach batting to the card and then fix the stitching and the backing fabric round that. It seems that pillow versions are called stuffed and ones with card in are called padded. I may look at cording the edges too and just see what turns out best.
Pictures will appear in the SAL soon - have in laws staying at the moment so can't spend too long on here
