I use a hand magnfying glass that works quite well. In the pattern I am doing, I have shapes, numbers, etc and the amount of times I have to keep looking so as not to mix things up.

I have a LeRan magnetic magnifying line ruler that I keep on or near my chart on the metal board. It sure comes in handy when something is difficult to decipher.
