fine point scissors

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

As I'm getting into smaller hardanger, I'm struggling to do the cutting with the scissors I have. My faithful old stork scissors work beautifully on 22ct and 25ct fabric, and OK on 28ct, but I'd like something finer.

These Janome precision scissors, though good for cutting close to the stitching when doing buttonhole or four-sided edging, are actually not very fine-pointed so no use for Hardanger cutting.

Jarvis recommended a pair which looked very good but at $53 plus postage to the UK is a bit over budget :-(.

I found online recommendations for the following two scissors, but would very much like to know if anyone has actually used these and can tell me more about them:

Jaanome Fine Point embroidery scissors

and

Prym Professional Pointed Fine Embroidery Scissors

or if anyone has used any other fine-pointed scissors which they have good experiences with, I'd love to hear!

Oh by the way, a lady at my stitching group let me try out her bent Hardanger scissors (like these ones) but I found they didn't work for me, so I'm looking for straight ones.

Mabel, these are the scissors I use

I haven't used them for hardanger, as I've never tried it, but they do have a very fine point. I have had them for years now, and they are still razor-sharp, right to the tip.

Has anyone used DMC's Vichy scissors? They look quite pointy in that picture.

Mabel did you look through all of the pages of different scissors they have all price ranges even as low as $18 and some of the lower priced look just as nice as the more expensive.

Exciting development: Janice Broadstock did a review of scissors in New Stitches, and two of them seemed promising, but of course even though the review sas "great for Hardanger" that doesn't necessarily mean on 40ct and finer :-), so I wrote and asked her, and she wrote back:

"Yes, it was the straight pointed titanium squissors I was going to suggest (the Jackpot ones are a little too heavy and bulky). I got a piece of 55 count Kingston and managed to snip a single thread. I found I had to stretch out the fabric a little so one it is mounted in a hoop, it opens up the holes a little to make it easier."

So squissors it is!
