Help on a pattern

Post by ladykara »

I don't want to be posting incorrectly, but I've posted on other sites, and I just can't seem to get my point across of what my trouble is. My sis and I are both working on similar patterns, and we are both facing the same dilemma. This is my first time working with Evenweave, and I understand the way it works, but I guess my analytical mind is staring at the finished product picture and it seems like there is contradiction. I have scanned my stitch legend and the cover picture so that you can see and comment. It's probably hard to tell with the picture but it was my best shot. My problem (as best as I can describe it) is that it LOOKS like the guide wants me to do a 1/4 stitch for certain colors? (e.g. Dark Moss Green and Moss Green), but if you look at the single line border, it looks like full stitches. Am I reading the guide wrong? There's nothing on the actual pattern that says anything more. I didn't want to scan that for fear of copyright issues.

If I am understanding you,
You are saying that you would expect, say Moss Green crosses indicated by a X,
But Moss Green 1/4 stitches indicated by a different symbol.
am I right?

Yeah, I'm taking by the guide that like Tan and Rust are full X's and then Burgundy through White are what look to be 1/4 stitches?

But if I go by that, I just think it's wrong, b/c the single border you see around each corner clearly show full X's, but those colors are in the 1/4 stitch section, if I follow that reasoning. I know it's hard to discern from a scanned pic but i was able to magnify it and still it looks like full X's.

Farther down the line, there seem to be other stitches that are half ( / ) ( \ ) and those I can actually see the difference in the picture, so I believe that, but I guess... seeing as I've not worked on Evenweave before, that I am not trusting that doing 1/4 stitches on most of the fabric is going to turn out right....

Should I just have faith in the pattern??

I am going to look through some of my old patterns to see if there is anything that may shed some light on the problem.
Have a look at the black stitches on the photo, are they full crosses, or 1/4's

The guide, the way I'm interpreting it, would list the black stitches as 1/4 stitches, but the picture seems to clearly show full X's.

I have the key for my Janlynn Cranes.
The key has the sign for cross stitch and 1/4 stitch and a single list underneath for the symbols and colours, the same way yours does, But on the chart, the cross stitches fill the whole square, and the 1/4 is indicated by the symbol in a corner of the square.
It's hard to explain, but have a good close look at the chart to see if any symbols only fill part of the square.
If the black was required to be worked as a quarter stitch, it would show on the chart to only fill part of it.

I think you are seeing half stitches, rather than quarter stitches. The guide is telling which stitches are full Xs, and which are half. Further, it seems as if the guide is letting you know which way the half crosses are to go (which is very useful!).

The colours in the top section are all two strands of the colour and stitched either as full or half crosses.
The colours in the second section are created by combining one thread of each colour in the needle at the same time, and are stitched as either full or half crosses.
The colours in the third section are half crosses (from bottom left to top right) using only a single strand.
The colours in the fourth section are the same, except they are stitched from bottom right to top left.
The fifth section looks like it's describing outlines in various colours, using a single thread and the last section is for the dreaded french knot!

Does this make sense with what you have in front of you? Boy, you really have picked a doozy of a design. Now I know you can't possibly be a "mediocre" stitcher!

I think that I am in agreement with Serinde. You are going to find that the colors that are in the first section are going to be both full stitches, (with color symbol that will fill the entire box) and there maybe some areas that the same color symbol, and in those boxes you will find that the symbol is in either the top of the square or the bottom of the square. These stitches should be worked with 2 strands. You may find that one box will contain 2 different symbols that will mean that there will be 2 halve stitches in the same space. Does that make sense to you it can be hard to follow when you are just reading and I can't actually point it out in person.

I really hope that we are helping and not making things worse.

Also THANK YOU so much for not putting the chart up as that would have caused a terrible problem as far as copyright. :D

Ok, so I think I'm understanding what you're trying to say, b/c I do see on the actual pattern ones that only fill half of the square, but you're saying not to follow the column that says "stitch" in my guide... wait.. ok, i think it just hit me. The Stitch column is probably saying, "You will use these colors for these types of stitches throughout the pattern"? Am I right? OMG I think I've been enlightened. Thanks so much! Now to call my sister! LOL

you have summed it up well.
I remembered that I had trouble understanding my crane chart until I found the half filled squares on the chart, then it fell into place.
