Newbie from Bonnie Scotland

Post by wanderingmedic »

Hi!

I've just joined the forum after looking around on t'internet for somewhere to chat to fellow stitchers. I'm getting back into stitching after a couple of years of not doing much -- back in the day, I was active in another online community but it has since become quite empty and inactive, so it's good to find other people to talk to.

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina. You will be able to find lots of fellow stitchers here that love to chat about stitching almost as much as we love to stitch. And we love to see pictures of projects too. What types of projects do you like to do?

Thank you for the welcome.

I tend towards larger projects, and plan to put my current project up in the SAL forum later today when I've wrestled it off its Q-Snaps!

Welcome from the West of Scotland! There are a few of us here. Are you a wandering medic because you are still doing foundation years? How do you find time to stitch!?! :wip:

Welcome from BC, Canada. As someone new to the forum myself, I can tell you this appears to be a really friendly group of people. I think we landed in the right place. :)

Serinde, I'm not even into foundation years yet! Up to a few weeks ago, I was a wandering medic because I was still charging around some of the furthest flung parts of the west of Scotland on my medical school rotations. But those days are hopefully behind me and I should be both wandering and getting paid for it come August.

Pay is good! We have a young friend, also a wandering medic from the Edinburgh stable, who seemed to end up in fun places like NZ... although I rather like the sound of you charging around the WoS -- there are some very far flung places. Do you know where you'll be based yet?

And I still don't know when you'll find time to stitch!

Forth Valley. I ended up in Tanzania last summer for a bit and people often think that the 'wandering' is a reference to that, but it's more of a reference to ending up in places like Biggar and Stornoway!

No, I don't know how I will either. I'm planning to make the most of the next few months.

This is a very interesting conversation, but I need to ask what a wandering medic is as that is new to me. It clearly requires a lot of travel to all kinds of places.

Carole, it's something that I dubbed myself last year. I'm a medical student, and in the last couple of years of medical school, we trot around various hospitals in order to learn the hands-on stuff. Scotland is large enough and has few enough medical schools that you can get to quite far flung hospitals before you start enroaching on another medical school's territory, and I've spent the last two years being fairly consistently assigned to these far flung places. The "wandering medic" thing came about when I was looking for a blog URL, on a weekend when I hadn't lived in my own house for about three months and was switching between a hospital in Inverclyde (on the road to the islands) and one in Biggar (on the road to England), and it's stuck.

Thanks. The term fits what you are doing. You will certainly know Scotland when you're done. How you could find time to stitch is amazing. Do you have a lot more wandering to do before you have completed medical school?

Forth Valley! That's my neck of the woods. Presume you were at the shiny and new hospital in Larbert? I wonder if Inverclyde and Stornoway have more in common than might at first be apparent -- a good friend is a Lewisman, and I swear his liver was "Clyde built"!

SRI, ye gods and little fishes. What a place. Larbert is... different. Even has a Starbucks to go with the smokers out the front of the building!
