Marker or pen for gridding

Post by kasper »

I've tried several places and nothing has anything that will work! I bought one thing that said washable but...yeah not so much.

What do you guys use for your grids? This is the last thing I need before I can start my HAED and I really want to get going.

I got a special washable pen from my local needle craft shop, i had looked in hobbycraft but was not convinced that any of those would come out of my cross stitch material and the staff in there while perfectly pleasant are next to useless they have no idea about any of the stuff they sell, also the instructions with the pen suggest testing it on a edge of the material first to be sure it does come out and i have had no problems so far.

If you cant get a pen right away you could grid with some other thread just say the first page and continue your search for a gridding pen while you get going....just thought

This looks like mine and it washes out with cold water the same.

Hope this is some help :)

There are lots of pen gridders on the forum - so I am sure someone will be able to recommend a trustworthy pen! I don't like washing my work so I use thread to grid (sulky sliver metallic) - I've also heard some horror stories with pens ruining stitching (and you could bet that would happen to me!), but that hasn't happened to anyone on here (that I know of) thankfully!

There are several water soluble pens available. I don't know where you live, but in the US you can find them at the larger craft stores. They are available also at 123Stitch on line. I use the Mark-B-Gone Marking Pen though I'm pretty sure I got it at Walmart. 123 Stitch also has Clover Water Soluble Markers. I use the blue but a search for Water Soluble (don't try searching for washable ink pens because nothing comes up) pens shows other colors and one has an eraser (I might try that when I have to get more pens). I have never had trouble with the lines not washing out and I have had to wash my pieces and regrid them occasionally because of kitty mishaps on my work.

Bethshaya wrote:Pilot Pens also makes a new pen on the market called Frixion. It is Iron Off. Just apply heat when you are done with your project and the lines are gone.

The only caveat is that the lines come back with very extreme cold (like -20*F). But unless you live in Alaska, Iceland or store your finished product in the freezer, you should be OK.

You can buy them at any US office supply store, but not sure if they are available yet in the UK. But you can order online.

I was visiting my mom for a few days and she was showing me her Frixion pens. She uses a hair dryer to get rid of the marks. Man, those are nifty pens! I'm looking forward to getting a couple of them to grid with.
