Had a go at getting the grid boxes as closed and complete as I could on a different piece i'm working on and it looks like the below image. Its over 8 and under 2 .. still cross hair style, but much bigger cross hairs and less gap in between each one. I think i'm going to change to this as my permanent gridding method.

Peepfaleep, when I was originally reading up on gridding a few months ago (i'd also never done it before then), everyone kept saying that there was no best way and that i would need to try a few different methods and I would get a feel for which one was best for me. And that's exactly how it has turned out ..... the 8/2 is the third method i've tried and so far its the one that I prefer. You just need to have a go and you'll find pretty quickly if there are things that frustrate you about a particular gridding method. I'll probably get frustrated with something about the 8/2 method soon and be trying another method before long!!!

I do tie knots at the start of each grid row/column. If i'm taking the grid line all the way across the fabric to the end of the row or column, then i also tie a knot where it finishes. I'm finding though that I just grid the section i'm working on, in which case, i cut the grid line part way across the fabric and just leave it hanging there with a little tail coming through to the front of the fabric. It seems to stay, probably as the count of the fabric is small enough that the holes hold the grid line ok. I haven't got a photo to show you ... i'll try and remember to take a photo when i get home and post it. It's not using 8/2 though .. its using 5/5 as that was my preferred method when i gridded page 1 of the HAED i started, but it'll show how i start and end the rows.

Thank you so much for that! It makes more sense when I can see the picture. I had a go at it just to try it and I think what bugged me was that it didn't lay flat and because of that, I pulled it out. I noticed that it left larger holes where I went in and out of the fabric but I suppose it would get covered up with stitches (Aida 18) Looks like you stitch under the sulky thread too. Maybe I will try it again with coated hand quilting thread since I has so much of it and try it your way with the knots.

thanks again! stitching looks great!

No problem! It's interesting the gridding thread is leaving the holes bigger on yours .. especially on an 18ct fabric where the holes are already quite big. I'd probably try and find a finer gridding thread? The one I use really is just like a tiny thin little ribbon, and on the 28ct fabric I'm using it doesn't cause the holes to be any bigger when I take it out...
