Peepfaleep, I used a mechanical pencil 0.5 lead. Since it will be completely covered and I'll be gently washing the piece at the end, I'm not worrying about it. A previous project confirmed that the pencil will come out anyway, with the right cleaning solution. For the next 3 HAEDs, I ordered magic guide Aida 18 count from Sew and Sew in the UK.

Initially, I tried to sew a line with thread and hated it. I was afraid of using some of my quilting markers, fading or washable. No idea why but I was. So, pencil worked for me.
A good friend is about to start her first HAED and told me she has no intention of gridding as she counts and has never needed gridding in the past. I told her that HAEDs are a different beast and, even with the gridding, I make mistakes. She'll see what I mean soon enough.
I think I'll work on a couple of quilting projects this weekend and then on to page 6.
