Dimensions kits & running out of thread - frustrating!

Post by alx008 »

Last year I did the Dimensions 'galloping horses' and kept running out of the same thread, each time I would email the company in America and get sent a small amount of thread which would not be sufficient. I think I did this 3 times.

And now I am almost at the end of Dimensions 'Brilliant Butterfly' and yep, you guessed it, have run out of a crucial thread!

There must be an easier way than ordering it from America?!
I have tried a conversion chart for the Galloping Horses and it was a really bad match, I have to unpick a whole section...

It has put me off the Dimensions Kits to be honest, anyone else found the same thing?!

I can imagine how frustrating it must be. :tantrum:

I personally have never run out of thread on a kit, although I've cut it very close before, but usually on my Dimensions kits I always have so much leftover, but then again I'm known to use a thread till I can barely move the needle.

I have stitched many kits and never run out before either!
The particular kits I stitch use several strands at once for texture effect so they must have just underestimated!
Oh well, guess I will just have to wait the 6 weeks it takes for some more to come, I don't dare try a conversion chart again!

I did once get a Dimensions kit where it seemed they switched colors around, I had so much of one that only needed a few strands, and barely had enough of a similar color that was present all over the chart, it was the closests I've come to running out and it did seem like they may have misplaced those two colors.

I've done a few Dimensions kits.. though none recently. And I've not run out of thread either (but maybe they were more generous with threads in the past?)

If you keep running out of thread.. I would take a look at the way you are stitching.

I ran out of thread for 2 Dimensions Christmas stockings I've stitched. When I was stitching the first one 2 years ago I ran out a few times. At one point it was getting towards Christmas and I had to wait 3 or 4 weeks or so for the thread to be sent from the US. It was a bit of a worry at the time. I think I only ran out of thread once whilst stitching the 2nd one though. I don't really think it had anything to do with the way I stitched . It was very frustrating at the time and I'm not sure I'd buy anything now that didn't use either Anchor or DMC thread which are easily available in the UK

this ^

if you are stitching so the back of your work looks like |||||||||| and you have not cut out a crazy amount of knots or such, and you are stitching with the amount of strands it recommends, then its strange to be running out of thread. I have a few dimentions kits, and all of them have enough to stitch it twice!

I have stitched quite a few Dimensions kits and have not run out of threads. I do stitch until barely enough thread to end off. I use the loop system to start and when I am near the end, stitch through the back a few stitches.

Tell them how much you have run out by - it helps them work out how much to send.

Could you eye a match in color rather than using a conversion chart?

I ran out of thread on a kit I did earlier this year but it was my own fault. it was a depiction of York Minster in England that I bought in the gift shop there when I visited in 2004. I started it and decided I didn't like the linen that came in the kit and switched to a piece of Aida I already had, but which had a lower thread per inch count so it ended up larger than it would have been if I'd done it on the fabric in the kit. It was done in many shades of tan so I just went to Joanns and bought one of every shade of tan DMC they had, and eyeballed them to match to the original.

Ive never ran out of thread on a kit, what is your stitching technique? It might be a reason why you seem to run out
