Post by vickil »

Hello, this is my first post, and I would like some advice please.
I am looking to buy a frame to hold my hoops. Please explain what a no baste frame is.
Thank you.

no baste frames are scroll frames that use a method other than basting to attatch the fabric to the scroll rods.
if you are looking for something to hold a hoop you are looking for a floor stand or a lap/table stand.

The frame I am looking at says it has a sticky stripe. I am not sure this would be very good. Do you have an opinion?

You're definitely talking about frames, not hoops, for holding stitch work.

Sticky stripes only work for a short period of time and really rely on the fabric being rolled around the bar tight for hold.

Velcro is similar as whilst it sticks well to the bar it never sticks well to the fabric - so again the frame relies on the material being would around the bar tight for hold.

My preferred method is basting because it holds tight even if the fabric isn't rolled up. But with frames that use basting you need to ensure your bars are held very securely to get good tension - I find peg style holds are hopeless and prefer a screw and ring nut and even then some are better than others. Mine are all handmade so I can't recommend brands really.

BUT of all the frames I believe the Millenium frame by Needle Needs looks brilliant and doesn't require basting or sticky stuff (waiting on mine now to try it out - but very good reviews from people that know and the science is sound).

Hoops are a different kettle of fish all together ...

However desirable the millenium frames are they are a bit pricy. Oh how I want one though!!!

You can get easy clip frames which have plastic clips that hold the fabric on the poles. I use them almost exclusively now as I have more change getting the fabric straight!! And you can take the fabric on and off quickly so you can change projects. They come in many sizes and are not expensive.

Hope that helps.

I think you are thinking of a floor stand

Q-snaps are another option. They're much cheaper than a Millennium frame and most floor stands are able to hold them. I've found they're much easier to hold in hand that hoops because they're a bit thicker.

As far as "no baste' scroll rods, I would NOT recommend getting the ones that are split down the middle. You stick the edge of the fabric in the slit and then roll the fabric around the rod. Do they even sell those anymore? If you see them, don't get them. I'm perfectly happy with the rods you baste the fabric onto. If you're like many of us, you'll probably try a few different things before you find out what works best for you.

I still use my old Tomorrow's Treasures frames. (Now called American Dream Products)

I was wrong, it uses velcro I believe.

Has anyone tried this one?

I am so glad that there are so many different products for our craft because I find the scroll frames to be useless for me. I hate the floppy edges and the way that they hang on the bars. I love the Q's and find them to hold the work better tighter and more to my liking.

It is great that we all have a choice and have the opportunity to fit our styles.

I dont have this particular one, but I have used scroll frames that use velcro. I dont like them at all. its fine if you have the fabric wrapped around the rods a few times it holds tight, but once you get towards the edge of the fabric, the velcro pulls right off.
I like scroll frames that you baste the fabric to, another no baste option is the handi clamps scroll frame, they hold much better than velcro.

Niki, those Easy Clip Frames you posted the link too look great! Looks like kind of a cross between Q snaps and a scroll frame. Can you give a little more info on using them? Do you roll the fabric around the bar and then apply the clip, or do you clip it first and then roll it taut? I'd like to get one and experiment with it if I can get them in the United States. I love using Q snaps but sometimes they get a teeny bit loose.

I've got some easy-clip ones, and I clip first, then roll; not sure it would work the other way round but then I've never tried :-)

Difficult to get the sides really tight though, and as I'm lazy the thought of lacing the sides puts me off immediately  Fortunately most of my projects are relatively small. But I've been reading up on the Millennium frame (Mary Corbett has a really good series of reviews on the frame and the stand) and that appears to keep the sides completely taut without having to lace :thinks: :thinks:

The only downside being that I don't think it would work well with my beloved Lowery stand, and I really can't justify getting another stand as I mostly work hoop-in-hand :-(

I like the easy clip frames, I just put enough fabric so that about a centimetre pokes out of the groove and clip on. Then you roll it round. I tend to get the edges tighte enough, although when there is a lot of stitching it does get loose. But I just get a couple of brace clips (the little crocodile clips) and some ribbon and tie them to the side frame, thus pulling the sides taut.

Rose, yes we are all very lucky aren't we!! It's funny also how your tastes can change as time goes on. Sometimes I go through a hoop phase, other times I love my scroll frames!! I love how there is so much choice in cross stitching.

I use this frame. It comes with velcro that you attach at the end of your fabric that then attaches to the rods. When your project is complete, you then cut the end of the fabric off.
I have been using this for a while, no complaints. I previously had the same frame where I had to baste - I will not go back to basting.
