Photocopying and copyright do not mix, as Rose will undoubtedly tell you. Check out the various discussions about copyright spread around the forum. (Didn't there used to be a copyright sticky? Why can't I find it?)

This doesn't stop a kind soul sending you the mag, you stitching the design, and then returning the mag.

Sorry to be such an old trout about this, but we can get into so much trouble, and no one wants to put our lovely forum at risk, now, do they? :(

Hi Colin, I've got a November 2001 Cross Stitcher with a Bagpuss design which you are welcome to have, and I'll check whether I've got the other one lying around somewhere. I've got a box full of various old cross stitch mags which are waiting to be eBayed so who knows! I'll get back when I've gone through the pile :-)

Thank you Serinde. The thread is right above this post at the moment it is called Copyright Information.

That is a good idea as long as the photocopy is just used to work the pattern and then destroyed. But be careful when talking about copying patterns and sharing them as the copyright then comes into play.

Rose; but if he already has the design, just ruined it, surely copywrite permits him to have a copy? Like with music CDs you can copy them to your hearts content and give people copies so long as everyone with a copy has an origional. It's a little loophole. You're allowed to have back ups in case you ruin one. That's how it is on CDs, DVDs and VHS so I wonder if it's the same on charts? I mean we use this to some degree when making copies to mark on.

Well what I understand from the designers is this and this is my word not exact wording from the designer.

They (the designer) usually give permission to make a copy of the pattern as a working print, then that must be detroyed at the end of stitching. If they chose not to make the print and mark on the original chart then they have made a decision that this is a one time stitching to then ask for a copy from some one else would be the same as asking for a copy of a new pattern that they do not own.

If the pattern is damaged in someway (water spill, dog attack, fire, ect....) the original purchaser may contact the designer or distributer and ask for a replacement. The designer can make a choice on a case by case basis of itf they choose to replace the damaged pattern.
