I'm very new to cross stitching and have a question I hope someone may be able to answer.
I am creating a collage from separate cross stitches each on a different piece of aida. I would love to be able to put them together on a backing and then frame them but I don't know how to do it without it looking like they were done on different pieces of aida.
Is there a way to do this short of cutting directly up to the outer stitch all the way around?
Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! I'm afraid that I can't help you with what you are trying to do, though I think our creative members will have some ideas. Are these pieces that you have stitched? It sounds like you are trying to make it appear like one piece rather than as a collage which I think of as a piece of art made from many different things. Perhaps if you could post some pictures of what you are working with, it would be easier to provide some ideas. I hope you will show us your progress on this also. I am very curious as to how it turns out.

If I understand what you would like to do is, cross stitch a group of different pictures and then just as you would from a magazine is cut around the finished pieces and put them together on a board. You would like to cut them as close to the finished stitches as possible and yet have the fabric not fray and loose some of your crosses.????
If that is correct then the only thing I can think that you could do with the edges is use a product called Fray Check. It is a product that seals the edges of the fabric and stops it from unraveling. This is a link that I found, it is from Amazon but most fabric stores or Stitching Shops or Quilting stores should have this or another similar product on hand.
You could stitch a row of backstitching around each motif and then stitch them together through the backstitching (like doing a biscornru). Here's one of probably a large number of youtube tutorials. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQiTZwqnH3c" target="_blank
Instead of meeting one corner with the middle of a second motif, you would, of course, match the corners.
An alternative would be to cut each motif a couple of stitches away from your motif and fray one stitch-worth of fabric. Then you could just mount each motif as close together as you wish on a backing fabric, board or whatever. It would be hard to make it look like one piece of fabric, though.
I had another idea ... You could cut the CCS fabric large enough to wrap tightly around an artist canvas http://www.michaels.com/artists-loft-ba ... 87893.html" target="_blank
(they come in many sizes) and then adhere the sides of them together with hot glue or other method. You could then put some kind of trim along the joins if you wished ... beads, ribbon, etc. Foam core board cut to the right size would work also.
