Hello from a male newbie.....

Post by mattyj3nks »

Morning all,
I have registered on here as I am fairly new to cross stitch and could really do with some help/pointers.....

I have just ordered a full kit of a photo of my dog, the design is 10.5x14 inches....I know this is pretty large but what kind of frame/hoop should I get as im sure the size of the aida will become frustrating with it flopping everywhere.

Im not wanting to spend too much but any help would be very much appreciated.

 Hello and welcome to the forum

As for your question---it really is a matter of preference---I use qsnaps for a lot of my projects---and if there is a lot of extra fabric that I have to deal with I roll it up and secure it under a qsnap cover---I'll see if I can locate a thread on hear that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about

I did a bing search rather than try to find a topic in the forum---here is a link to a site that sells both the qsnap and the grime cover---you can do a search for how to make them on bing as well---should give you an idea of one way to deal with larger stitching projects

That actually isn't terribly large, all things considered. What to use as a frame, as has already been mentioned, is very much a matter of personal preference; but when you're new, you have no idea what your preferences are.

If your budget is small, just start out with a 10-inch or 12-inch hoop and see how things go. You'll develop your preferences as you progress.

If Q-snaps are in the budget, go with them. A lot of folks like them. If you think the excess fabric will be an annoyance (I don't care how much the grime guards hold, I can't stand that wad of fabric in my hand), you might want to look at a scroll frame. (There are a lot of different scroll frames, I picked that one because it is budget-minded.) If you go with the scroll frame make sure the rods are at least as long as your fabric is wide.

And Welcome aboard! :)

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! Lots of good suggestions for what you can use. I used wooden hoops for years and then after joining the forum moved to Q-Snaps. Now I'm back to hoops, using the No-Slip hoops and am thinking about a scroll frame. So choosing something now doesn't mean you can't change your mind at a later date. I hope that you will stay around and show us pictures of your stitching as your progress. Stitching is a great hobby and we have several men who are pretty active on the forum. And ask as many questions as you need to. Every one of us started out new. Someone will either know the answer or will have a pretty good idea of where to go to find the answer.

Hello from Colorado and welcome the forum. First things first - what kind of dog? :-)

As for what size of hoop, Qsnaps, scroll bar - if budget is most important, any size hoop will work. You'll just move it as needed. The hanging fabric can get annoying, but you'll get used to it and/or find ways to clip it to the hoop and get it out of the way.

I do hope you'll stick around and share your progress with us.

I was in your position 4 years ago, and bought an Elsebee roller frame with 24" rods and 12" stretchers. That has done me for all my projects since. It was about £10, so reasonably cheap & is big enough for most reasonable projects. After 4 years of continuous use it' getting a bit difficult to keep the tension now, but it is still working.

All the best,

Richard.
