Stitch tracking log
Hi everyone! I'm Baaaack! Have been reading all the posts and it is so good to see everyone still here.
I have a question. I have tried searching but no luck. Probably the person entering the search has something to do with it. But, I am looking for a stitch tracking app or spreadsheet, etc. I don't have the smarts or patients to create one for myself. Any one have any ideas? Thanks
Vicki

So good to have you back with us!
I'm sure that others have used these things, and can offer advice.

Re: Stitch tracking log
Welcome back!! I am sorry that I can't offer much advice! I have often looked for the same thing with no such luck. I had to stick to good old fashioned pen and paper. It's tedious, but works until I find something else or make my own spreadsheet. I just don't know where to start...
What exactly did you have in mind? I could probably come up with something.

Re: Stitch tracking log
What is the sort of thing you want to track?
I do count stitches on completed pages (made easy by the fact my charting program says how many stitches there are on a page), but it sounds like you have a different idea in mind. If you could describe what you want in more detail it may be possible to narrow down on whether there is anything extant that will do the job.
Regards,
Richard.

Re: Stitch tracking log
Thanks Richard. The main things I would like to tract or my starting number of stitches, number of stitches per day, and a projected time of finish. I know it sounds simple but I realize its not. I'm not good at spreadsheets and formulas or I would make it myself. I don't want/need all the nitty gritty per page totals. My main objective would be a projected time of finish based on my daily stitching totals.
Thanks again for any help you can give.

Re: Stitch tracking log
Just a suggestion. What if you just do some simple arythmetics looking at the chart?

Re: Stitch tracking log
It's the sort of thing that would be fairly easy to do by a spreadsheet or program, but I don't know of any pre prepared spreadsheet's/programs. Can I ask what device you'd be doing it on? I can do programs for Windows PC's, but a little excel spreadsheet would be equally effective and can be used on tablets.vickil wrote:Thanks Richard. Edited to add:
Played about with Excel for 5 mins or so & got the following:
Initially it needs you to enter the start date & number of stitches, then every day you add a new line with the date & total number of stitches, then the predicted finish date & total are updated. I've set it so formulae are entered down to row 100, but the formulae can be copied to new rows.
Is that the sort of thing you were looking for? If so PM me with your e-mail address and I'll e-mail it to you.
Richard.
Re: Stitch tracking log
You amaze me Richard with your skills to come up with programmes like these, this kind of thing is far beyond me, I am happier with a needle in one hand and fabric in the other.
I do keep a log though, but only a simple thing in a notebook of when I started a project and when I finished it and any special notes like how long special finishings took (like the French knots on WH).
I have started keeping a notebook now of who has received what now as well.

Re: Stitch tracking log
There are only three different working parts to the formulae in the spreadsheet.
In the 'Total Stitches so far' column it's: "=SUM($B$5:B6)". This simply sums all the 'number of stitches today' entries from the start of the project.
In the '% Complete' column the formula is: "=C6/$B$2". This divides the total so far by the total number of stitches, and expresses it as a percentage.
The 'Projected Finish Date' is the only column where any real calculation is done. The formula is '=(A6-$B$1)*$B$2/C6+$B$1'. This takes the time from the current date to the start date (A6-$B$1) and divides it by the proportion finished (*$B$2/C6). This result then tells you how long the project is expected to take based on the current stitching speed. The length of time is then added to the start date (+$B$1) to give a finish date.
The three formulae are then protected by a few 'IF' statements to prevent division by zero and detect if the project is complete, giving the actual formulae below:
Total Stitches: "=IF(A6<>0,SUM($B$5:B6),0)"
Projected Finish Date: "=IF(A6<>0,IF(C6<>0,IF(C6>=$B$2,"Complete",(A6-$B$1)*$B$2/C6+$B$1),"Never"),"")"
% Complete: "=IF(C6>=$B$2,1,IF(AND(A6<>0,$B$2<>0),C6/$B$2,""))"
Nice simple spreadsheet compared to a few I've had to do. One of the more complicated was the response of a 750 kg container with a spring shock attenuation system inside, and I showed that after dropping 3 feet (900mm) the box would rebound, jump 6" in the air, come to a halt, jump a further 6" up, pause, fall 6", pause and then finally hit the ground a second time. We were lucky to have the test videoed at 1000 frames a second when it was tested at MIRA, and the video showed exactly the behaviour I'd predicted but never dreamed of actually seeing.
Regards,
Richard.

Re: Stitch tracking log
Richard you are a genius!!! OMG! This is perfect! If you were here I'd kiss you.
See, this I what I do not have the brains for. Or patience.
Thank you SOOO much! How can I repay you for this?
You have made my day.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Vicki

Re: Stitch tracking log
PM sent.
No 'repayment' need be considered - people on CSF have helped me so much in the past, I feel as if I'm simply returning a small part of the help I've been given.
Regards,
Richard.

Re: Stitch tracking log
It works perfectly! Just what I wanted. Even tho some of the resulting finish dates are really shocking. Just means I need to stitch more. Right?
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Re: Stitch tracking log

Yep, definitely needed.
It's one of the reasons why I'm not using anything similar. I don't want to see that I'm likely to finish my projects in 2022 or later!

Richard.

Re: Stitch tracking log
Nice spreadsheet, Richard. And you beat me to it
I pretty much had something similar (I tried to make a log too, after reading the first post) minus the projected finish date. I think that's a nice touch. I also neglected the IF statements
I tweaked the one I made with your additions and it works lime a charm!

Re: Stitch tracking log
Must admit if I were the only one using it, the 'IF' statements would have been omitted from that one too. I have done spreadsheets for my wife (Tracy) in the past, and she finds ways to accidentally break almost any program. And she never knows what she did either.. The program spontaneously wrecks itself, apparently. So, when doing any computer stuff for anyone else, I design it as if Tracy is going to get hold of it at some point, and try to make it 'Random Accident' proof.

Richard.

Re: Stitch tracking log
May I ask a stupid question, please? What for do you need to know the number of stitches you have made on this or that day?
