And following August Owl, here's August Bird! Picture came out a bit dark but he's a lovely purplish blue color.

Ok, so I was also lured by the Tree of Stitches, and went with the flock to the Yahoo Group The Stitch Specialists and downloaded instructions to the ToS. I made a tentative start on it but got decisions to make and wanted to post and ask opinions first.
I'm stitching it on 28 ct metallic flecked evenweave, and the plan is black trunk (as started) and I was thinking the specialty stitches would be one of these: blended shades of grey, a variegated thread in shades of grey, blue/green with grey undertones or something similar to get a wintery feel with the flecked fabric.
What do you all think? I'm open to other ideas on different threads, color schemes that would match the fabric and the solid black tree trunk.
Btw, the picture doesn't really show how shiny those flecks are, since the lighting when I took the pic was so horrible.

Love your choice of fabric--and the threads you've mentioned sound great! I really do love this project and have loved stitching it up--but I'm still in the early stages. I really don't think you can go wrong with this one!! I hope you enjoy stitching it up!!

I do like your fabric and your choice of black is really striking. I don't think I have seen one like it before and I really do like it. Can't wait to see what the updates bring.

I love the colour ideas you have, anything that makes it more wintry should look fantastic. Really fantastic way to tie it into that great fabric.

Lovely fabric, and I like your colour ideas. My personal preference would be for the grey-undertone blues and greens. Perhaps 503 and 932, or 926?

I'm off to Michael's this morning for floss for a HAED (yes, another one

) and will check the variegated floss to see if there's anything that sounds like those blue/green with grey undertones, or to just get some of those colors and blend them.
I must say though, tried finishing the trunk last night (at midnight) after a WoW raid and now I have to frog half of the roots.
And I might frog the whole thing and start over with 3 strands or go 2 strands of Anchor's black, since DMC 310 just doesn't have the same coverage.

I have heard that Anchor's black is thicker. I agree and wish I had known that before I started the LOTR or I might have realized I could have stitched 1 over 1. I love the feel that 2 over 1 (25ct) gives it, but would have been easier if my other colors could have been only 1 strand.
Can't wait to see which HAED you are planning on starting.
