Arianwen, there is no such thing as a silly question!!! I have used all DMC with the exception of the few silks and the metallics shown on page 1 of this thread for which there is no DMC conversion. I would dearly love to stitch these using the special silks, but with 2 growing children and just working part time I cannot justify the cost at the moment. I bought the bead pack from the European Cross Stitch Company, who also sell the specialist threads as a kit, although make sure you're sitting down when you see how much they are!!
Excluding the cost of the DMC threads, this Chatelaine cost me about £130 to kit up, including the pattern, fabric, beads, metallic threads and silks which couldn't be subbed for DMC. I'm guessing it'll cost at least that much again to have it framed once it's done.
There are some smaller Chatelaine designs, including free ones (I've just finished Springtime Roses but I can't remember for the life of me where they are on the web. I'll put up a link when I remember
