I am not at all impressed with the week-end splurge, I think it is a bit of a cheat.......

I do have a tip for not wanting to buy anything but I am not suggesting that anyone go out and try it. My being sick has had the wonderful side effect of not wanting to buy anything. I don't even want to look at any of the sites or go to the store. Like I said it is not my recommended choice of stash ban because it also causes you not to want to stitch or eat or anything else. :(

It is a bit of a cheat and I think it's probably too early for it but....I do need a piece of fabric for one of my projects so I'm pretty happy. I'm going to try to spend way less than the splurge she gave us.

And I guess I'm glad there was an upside to you being sick..but I really hope you're finally getting better.

I'm with you guys... Especially since we're getting this "freebie" because she's going to an event.. Showing constraint while going to an event like this would show how seriously she's taking the challenge she set in place.. I'm really disappointed with this news to be honest...

I was just telling my husband about the $100. I'm like, doesn't that defeat the purpose of this challenge?

If this was in like... July then maybe, but it's only February and I haven't even started two of my projects that I kitted up right before January started.

I agree the cheat is a bit early. I also don't like that I can spend money in advance. I don't mind the roll over money. But being able to spend junes money now.. why not just make it a yearly budget then...
I don't know maybe I am snarky.

I have about 5 projects all ready to go as well (not counting the 3 WIPs) but this splurge weekend makes me feel pressured to buy more. I really don't need it now, I've got plenty to do so I'm going to try to abstain. Chances are, if there's a certain pattern catching my eye now, it'll still be available later this year or even next year.

Well, my husband & I had our plans changes because of the snow storm down in DC, so instead of going there we are going to Columbus Ohio and of course I looked for a cross stitch shop there. We're going tomorrow to the shop (which I confirmed was still open even with the market going on). So now I don't feel pressured NOT to spend anything, but I rolled over some money from last month so it's not even like I was in dire straights!

I'm using the splurge weekend to buy a piece of fabric I needed for my last project not kitted up...I had the chart and fibers, just not the fabric. I couldn't get the piece I wanted from my usual source so I had to order a piece twice as big (and twice as expensive) from 123stitch. While I was there, I also bought a Christmas chart, but I'm counting the price of that toward my $25 monthly allowance because that just seems the right thing to do.

So, while I do think the splurge was a little early and a little too much, I did use it...but I feel pretty pleased that I didn't take advantage of it and use it all instead of just $40.

Oh Rose, I hope you feel better soon! Being sick is not the best way to save money!

I have a different way to save money. You can get snowed in with 2 small children! Wednesday night into Thursday we got about 10 inches of snow and then another 2 inches of sleet/snow mix Thursday night into Friday morning (those up north may not think that's a lot, but it's a lot for us to get at one time). To top it off, we're supposed to get another 1-5 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow!

The schools have been closed the past two days and the kiddos are going crazy. I haven't had any time to even think about shopping (besides, my LNS was probably closed yesterday and maybe even today) because I've been too busy shoveling snow trying to keep up with the forecast. Mainly because this is what I'm trying to keep clear:
Image

That's the only way in and out of my house. I wish I had a pic of the steps before we cleared all the snow off of them. It was quite a sight!

So yeah, no shopping for me. No making use of splurge weekend (even though I agree with those of you think it's kinda early for that big of a cheat weekend) because I'm just to wore out (and sore!).

I hope everyone else is having better weather. Oh, and if anyone wants some snow I'll be glad to send you some of ours! :D

I can't imagine having to balance, stay on my feet, and shovel those steps. On the other hand, I can't imagine trying to navigate the steps if they weren't shoveled. (I'm glad my HOA covers snow removal...shoveling snow is very hard work!) We've started warming up and our snow is finally melting.

And by the way, your house is so pretty! Snowy steps and all.

What a pretty house! I would guess there is a snowman family in the backyard? or has the weather been too nasty for playing in the snow? All we had was ice and closed bridges, but I just got back from a walk with one of my neighbors as the sun is shining and the 50's feel like the 70's right now!

Thanks for the complements, ladies! :D We're slowly working on fixing the house up and making it look nice. The plan for the spring is to refinish/repaint the front porch. The house is near 90 years old and ready for a face lift. :D

No snowmen this time. We had a snow fort for a while, but the temps yesterday got high enough that it collapsed. After that the fort became a snow slide, which made for some very wet bottoms by the end of the day. :D Big One had a blast playing in the snow, but Little One was having too much trouble just walking in it to have much fun. The snow was up to her knees, so she kept getting stuck (it's that very wet heavy snow that's impossible to move). The temps now are in the 40s F, so the snow is melting pretty quickly ... at least until the sun goes down and the temps drop below freezing again. :? Then we'll just have to wait and see what kind of precipitation we get tomorrow (at least hubby will be home tomorrow to do more of the shoveling! :D )

Send all the snow this way.. it'll melt by the time it reaches california and we desperately need the rain here... They're starting to talk about severely limiting water usage this year because there is NO snow in the mountains, and that's where our water comes from in the summer. I am dreading the thought of sponge baths and wondering how in the world I'm going to wash my hair.

As for spending.. even if she gives us a cheat weekend, I don't intend to use it. $25 a month is well above my own personal budget for this hobby, unless I am gifted some money... and since gift money doesn't count towards the budget, all is good.

That said, I spent a whopping 80 cents at home depot yesterday. I'm playing around with an idea for a needle organizer and had to get some supplies for it. I'll post pictures of my idea once I get it put together sometime this weekend.

Since I had a gift certificate from my son for Christmas, I used that and the discount that I got from my LNS to buy a lap embroidery hoop stand because my hands and joints in my fingers hurt if I have to hold the embroidery hoop in my hand. :bandaid: This way, I can stitch with both hands or without having to hold the hoop while stitching. This is my first experience with the hoop so will give it a try. The hoop stand costs around $75.00. I only had to add $20.00 with the gift certificate.

I think I am a compulsive online chopper only. I visited a shop in Columbus and only bought the floss on my checklist of colors needed for various LHN designs I Have in my stash and the two bead packs I still needed for my Glendon Place pattern (which I started last night!)... I'm really good at restraining myself in actual stores, but not so good on the internet.

Does anyone else have that problem?

I spent a total of $16.20 (not including the needles I needed and tax). I'm still $11 under with what I rolled over from January. No $100 splurge weekend needed!

Mechie- Out of curiosity, what is our LNS? Is it the Stitching Post in Catonsville? That's my shop and I live in Glen Burnie. The only others I know about are at the beach.

I didn't sign up for this challenge because I missed the deadline before I found out. I thought I'd play along "unofficially" but then I realized I had already spent about $60 on supplies online so I had already blown it. But after checking payment dates I realized they were all done on 12/31 so they wouldn't count.

I did spen $20.42 (also online) at patternsonline.com in January and that was it so I did pretty good then.

I've spent less than $5 so far in February on some floss I've run out of. But there's 2 new projects I want to get started (both HAEDs that I currently have) and I need 62 skeins of floss to do them. That would be another $30 give or take, plus $5 for a case to hold that floss, plus another $2-5 for needles . . . things can really add up fast. I might just the 6 skeins of floss I'm missing for another project and wait another month for the rest.

That's the one! It's the only one I know of around here. I'm actually closer to The Stitching Post than I am to any of the chain craft stores so end up stopping there frequently.

Speaking of LNS, I stopped in yesterday to pick up the Kreinik that I ordered last month (that was already paid for) and ended up spending around $16 on a new chart. It's called Glory in the Morning (or something like that) by Cross Wing Collection. I'll post a link to it when I'm not on my tablet :D .
