A tip someone gave me when using metallic threads is to put them in the fridge for a few hours, it stops a lot of the fraying. Sounds really silly but it does work
Wow, that's not something I would have never thought of. The rest of my family might wonder why there's thread in the fridge, but perhaps I'll give it a try when I get back to this project.

Anyone that comes to my house knows there might be thread in the fridge.

I just received this kit from my son today. He wants me to stitch this up for him to hang in his house as a memoir of DisneyWorld. How long did it take for u to stitch the design? I noticed that Oiralinde also has the kit too. Care to join in a stitch a long with me too?

The best tip for using metallics I ever learned was to TIE the thread to the needle. If you are using 2 strands of the same metallic just fold the thread length in half and feed the loop end through the eye of the needle and then put the tails back through the loop to tie. If you are using one strand do the same but make a loop at one end.
It uses extra thread to start but saves so much in fraying, not to mention reducing frustration and re threading time.

I should get back to work on this design, but it'll probably be a while still. I'm also very worried because I used a fabric pencil to grid it, but I have since learned it's very hard to wash the pencil out, and I don't know if I can safely wash all the metallics this piece has...

Well I'm back to this project again, and I've got a little update:
The tree on the other side is starting to take shape. There's only a small bit of castle on this page, so it will be mostly that tree and the sky.

I just read through this thread and admire your perseverence. I am going to have to look at the bottom of the drawer where I have some other unfinished work. This piece is looking very good. And the metallics, which I agree can be a pain to work with, really do add to the magical element. Really lovely work.

Ohh! Pretty colours!
I think it will be ok to wash metallics - I have, and it's turned out fine.

Yes, I already washed it and thankfully they were fine. Although, I used Orvus and it did discolor some of the fabric just a bit. It's barely noticeable though and the stitching will cover it.
