Something that has helped me is to find something I really really REALLY want.. and if I can hold out until a specified date I can have it... That way it doesn't feel like I'm restraining myself, but rather building myself up... if that makes sense

Lol. I actually don't let myself stitch during the day (I have a new baby and a three year old, so how could I?)
My DH says I have more stash than I have lifetime to stitch it all!

You'll have to borrow
this Lizzie*Kate design I've got in my stash -- I'm thinking of hanging it up in the kitchen.
LOL Mabel, she is looking for help so she doesn't buy stash and you suggest a kit to buy in the tread

.
Here is my suggestion, if you buy more stash you must send it to me or something of equal value from your stash already.

That should help you not buy more stash.

Mine has no idea as to the true extent of my stash, which is quite literally stashed all over the house. Fortunately for me he never goes up into the attic and he's not one to even look in drawers or cupboards. I even have aida hung up in the wardrobe and he has never noticed.

That's a great project.. and note Mabel said "borrow", although I suppose buying fabric and thread would be unhelpful.

I made a list once: "Things to complete before you buy any more cr*p." I listed all my WIPs - quilts, knit projects, crochet projects, etc. It was quite numbing to see all the projects I had started and not finished. I kept the list as a visible reminder that I didn't need anything else.
It actually helped for a while. Then I buried the list under a new pile of WIPs and kept on my merry way.
Good luck.

LOL!
I've been doing well I think. Got lots of new charts to thing about from Kell and a couple others. Got my stash laid out so I can see it. Keep reminding myself I have 3 WIPs and 1 kitted HAED to stitch haha. Working for now!

Helbel had a wonderful acronym for that, SABLE (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy). I think it's brilliant!! And I have definitely reached SABLE level!!

I think that might be me in another year now that I've joined this forum. My interest was waning and now it's back to old "stash-buying" levels. But as others stated, first I need to get some WIPs and UFOs under control!

Ooooh my. Umm, I'm totally there and I keep buying more.

Maybe when I'm old, I'll have a younger stitcher friend to whom I can will my massive stash when I die!
You could always start a new rule about stash:
You can only buy one new item when you finish a stash item. You could also say it's OK to buy a new stash bit if you sell or give away something from the stash. Sort of a ZSG (Zero Stash Growth) rule type thing!
It's really hard for me to resist a good sale, so if I know I can't afford to shop for silly stuff I totally avoid stitching type stores or if I must go to a craft store, I don't even look in the cross stitch or bargain bin areas. The bane of my thriftiness are bargain bins. For some reason I have a very hard time passing up a deal. Usually I'm pretty good at talking myself out of the more expensive regular stuff. I also avoid looking at sales fliers and coupons when I'm trying not to buy stash. That helps too.

I had to laugh when I saw the title of this post......not sure I can help you out because I can't seem to stop myself!

I definitely have enough stash to keep me going for several years, maybe not to SABLE standards yet, but I'm getting there......

An update for anyone who may be interested! I have resisted buying more stash since I posted this thread! I did make a few purchases on my birthday/black Friday, but can you blame me?

Thanks for all the advice!, I think I'm going to make it

That's good to hear! I think a little splurge on Black Friday is a reward for keeping your goal

I have so many patterns and kits I even bought furniture including cutting table book rounders and thread cases from a store that went out of bussiness. I have tried to stop but the urges sometime are to strong. I am noe trying to organize and set up a room just for my crafts. I hope this helps me stop.
