Lovely start :applesauce:
This isn't a style of pattern I'd normally go for, but I just love the rainbow colours in this - it may just end up on my wish list as well!!

:D :D If you were going to go for the HDF silks Carole, I would recommend going for the Premium over the Regular HDFs. The Premium is the equivalent to 1.5 ish strands of DMC so you would only need to use a single strand, whereas with the regular HDF you would need to use two strands of thread as you would with DMC to get good coverage. It is a lot easier to work with a single strand of thread when doing speciality stitches!

Where did you get the download? 123Stitcn has the chart for about $18 plus shipping; is the download price comparable?

You can get the download chart from Etsy directly from the designer for $20 - so probably works out the same as 123 Stitch but with instant gratification!

yep. I think it is actually cheaper on Etsy because I didn't get anything else to justify the shipping charges! and it is instant gratification. Now I do have to get the threads and fabric, but will go to Hand Dyed Fibers probably. 3.25/skein is way more than DMC but less than half the price of Amanda's silks. Of course, I can't imagine what else I will get.

Your HDFs will be a tiny bit cheaper Carole at $2.90 as they are solids, the variegateds are $3.25 - as you say much cheaper than the AVAS at $4.30!

The premium HDF is 3.25. Which are what I would get as you suggested. But I thought I saw the silk at @$7 or $8 but I must have been wrong. Oh oh you were right and it isn't that much more. Rethinking. And thank you for letting me figure this out on your thread when it should be for admiring your lovely progress.

Of course I don't mind Carole I am happy to enable! Just triple checked the HDF website - solid premium silk is $2.90, variegated premium silk is $3.25. It's whether the silk is variegated or not that alters the price, although we are only talking 35 cents a spool difference! HDF solids have a number after them, variegateds just have a name - it is quite confusing!

Looking forward to seeing what you go with!

Hi how pretty! And this would be the perfect sort of pattern to do with handspun thread like I've been playing with - in fact it's exactly the sort of pattern I was thinking of when I said I had ideas for playing with color.

If I got the pattern, I'd be WELL within budget, I have the undyed silk, all the dyes I need, and plenty of fabric..

Something to consider for sure!

Thank you. It is confusing and while I love looking at the website, it isn't the easiest one to figure out. Now I have decisions to make!!

Yep, it won't be for another few months or so, but I think that this one will probably get at least started on this year. I have an aunt who I think this would be perfect for, though I might change up the colors a bit.

Your stitching is gorgeous! I can't wait to see more updates. :)

My thoughts exactly! The etsy listing says it gives directions for specialty stitches. Do you think they would be clear enough for a beginner?

I haven't looked at it in a lot of detail yet, but the instructions seem very clear. Clearer than most. If you decide to try to stitch this, I am sure that you will get as much help as you may need. I find that having a piece to work on that has stitches other than cross stitch is fun and doesn't make my cross stitch pieces any less fun to work on.

As Carole says, the instructions are very clear - there is an easy to follow diagram for each of the speciality stitches used in the sampler. The only thing I would say is that this sampler has to be stitched on an evenweave or linen fabric, not aida, due to the nature of the speciality stitches. If that is something you've not tried before it might be easier to try that out on another project first, stitching full crosses over two. Alternatively, some people like to try everything new at once and aren't daunted by anything and just go for it!

As Carole mentioned - if you did run into any problems there is always someone on here that can help!

At the quarter way mark I'm putting this one down to stitch a bit on my HAEDs, but this one will be back for the HAEDless SAL - Bands 1- 6:
