Bandersnatch!

Jabberwocky

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

A distinctly odd poem, one wonders what Lewis Carroll must have been smoking when he came up with it. Anyway, as it's more than 80 years after his death it's definitely out of copyright.

I first came across a Jabberwocky in the guise of a twin 900cc engined beast of a motorcycle designed for drag racing at the Santa Pod strip in the mid 1980's. It was beautifully painted in black & green with a monstrous animal painted on the tank with huge claws and teeth. The bike used a formula 1 car rear tyre which stretched and bulged under the stupendous torque it developed as the bike roared off the start line pouring flame and smoke. It was reputed to do a standing 1/4mile in 2.2 seconds, though my memory is hazy on that side and I may be wildly wrong on the actual figure.
