My stitching method also varies a little depending on the type/size of it. For instance with smaller items such as cards, or my afghan, I will start in the middle of the item to be stitched and work as much as I can of the first colour, then go onto the next colour and so on.
With a larger design, for instance something that has lots of pages of chart, I start in the top left corner of one page of the chart and work as much as I can within easy reach in one colour and then the colour which starts next to it and so on, but try not to work too far from my starting point until I filled in all the stitches in between, then even though it's a large design I can still begin to see the picture developing.
