I use Fray-check on just about every fabric I use -- linen, jobelan, lugana, etc. I've tried zipgzag stitching the edges and by the time I'm done with the project, things have frayed. The Fray-check works every time, I haven't had any problems with it. Don't use tape of any sort. I just went through my WIPs and had two of them that I started several years ago, on which I used tape on the edges. Not only did the tape dry out and crumble, it discolored the fabric wherever it was touching, and left behind sticky residue. Ick.
I'm just starting my first HAED (this week, actually, just waiting for the fabric to arrive), so all these suggestions are so helpful!
