Some ribbon embroidery an be done with satin ribbon without any problem; anything which is worked completely at the front of the fabric, such as gathered stitch, for example.
However, satin ribbon is quite stiff, and rather difficult to pull through fabric, so any ribbon stitch that requires taking the needle with the ribbon through the fabric would be awkward. For those stitches, silk or sheer/organza ribbon is a better choice.
Silk ribbon is not readily available from most haberdashers, I think, but sheer ribbon shouldn't be difficult to find -- you can see what it looks like
