Definitely needed to be rescued, and it sound like you did a great job on it -- and three cheers for your framer for taking on the challenge too!

Yes, he's a great man! 
I hope he doesn't retire anytime soon. He's in his 60s and has arthritis - but he has a workshop in his garden, and works for himself, so.... he may not ever retire!
