That looks like a good solid hoop, and how lovely to have the note! Being deeper, it will hold the fabric better - if you bind the inner hoop it'll very likely keep the tension so well you won't need to adjust it throughout the project. (If you do think of binding the hoop, I describe the process with pictures here, and also give a link to a less tidy but much quicker method :-) )

What amazing finds there are to be had in 'charity/thrift' shops. :whoop:

That hoop looks unused.

Looks so well made. This is when you really want to learn about the person who donated it!

The handwriting reminds me of my mother's writing which makes me think it was written by an older person and if that's the case, it's somewhat old, but not an antique. The hoop is about 3/4" deep and 8.5" across, and very well. made. The tightening screw is old enough to be discolored (no longer shiny gold or brass) but it turns with no problem. I like the idea of binding the inner hoop and will definitely check out your instructions, Mabel. And Carole, I agree it would be nice to know about the person who donated it. "Bonney" is written in bold letters inside the hoop...is Bonney the niece who received the gift? Or the person who made the hoop? Either way, I'm keeping the note...now to put it somewhere safe...and NOT forget where that safe place is. LOL

My things have FINALLY all arrived to stitch my samplers!!!! I feel like I've been waiting an age!

I decided to bite the bullet and buy some fabric. SO I bought two pieces  both 50x70, one 25 count one 28 count. I havent decided which I'm going to use more of yet, Im leaning to the 25 count for the gift versions and the 28 for my version.

Image

the perle cotton and the green wildflowers were ordered at the same time as the fabric, the red and the metallics I had already - but I wanted to do a floss toss!

The Charms I've had for a couple of weeks and were bought at a really good price from Lifetime samplers. As you can see I shoulda checked the sizing but I will make it work. The christmas tree is going to be a replacement for a birdhouse charm that is no longer made, and the cherub is in place of an angel playing a horn. I just liked the shooting star so I might swap them out.

I have decided Mabel is a terrible enabler - Look what she made me do

Of course no thread should travel alone. So I bought 3 other colours too :D They accidentally send me a bobbin of the yellow instead of a skein but when I checked with them, they sent an additional bobbin. The dye lot is ever so slightly different but thats fine because I can use them on separate samplers if I need to.

Now I just have to finish my current piece before I can make a start on these, and hope I can get them done before Christmas - we will see! I am hoping to kit these up properly tomorrow, which is my day off, so I'm going to concentrate on my current piece this afternoon and see how far I can get with it!

I can't wait to see what beautiful samplers you will create with those lovely threads! I always find it so much fun when new threads and fabrics arrive. There is something almost magical about them.

My big problem with Mabel is not that she's a terrible enabler, my problem is the converse. It's that she's just so good at it...

Richard

Talking of which....

making up kits for classes and a talk (well, more of a show-and-tell at a former Embroiderers' Guild group) I noticed I could do with some more Madeira Lana (a wool/acrylic blend, thinner than crewel wool). Unfortunately Barnyarns don't do the large bobbins anymore, but most of the colours I needed in smaller quantities anyway so off I went to Sarah Homfray's website:

 As you know I like making stands for my work and everyone has been saying how good the Lowery Stands are so I have been pricing up making myself one. It was going to work out about £30 for a steel base plate and some stainless tube, then I would have to do some welding :thinks:

While I was thinking about it I saw a second hand one on Fleabay with a starting bid of £40 so thinks I "I'll bid the £40" it saves the effort of trying to remember how to weld and all the time to make it. Well I won it  but now, before it has arrived, I already want to modify it.....

Can someone tell me the diameter of the right angle stainless steel bar. I am hoping it is 12mm which I already have some of. Then I will look to cut a suitable length and bend it to make one of the Extra long L bars ready for when it arrives

That's great news you won the Lowery Jo! I've just measured my stand and the L bar on mine is 40mm diameter.

Thank you Nicola,

That seems very big (1 1/2") and it would be rather heavy  It won't bend even with my 20 ton press.

The one I won has a corner clamp rather than the side clamp. I am not sure which is better :thinks: They say that the corner ones are harder to make and I agree with them.

I used my craft tape measure and put it round and it definitely landed on 40mm. The blue part you see which is attached is a separate accessory (the large magnetic chart holder) and screw. The extension part on the left that holds the frame is 60mm in diameter.

40mm Circumference, that means 12.7mm diameter. Thank you, I will go and see what I can find.

(And the 60mm circumference would be 19mm, or more likely 3/4" which tells me they work in imperial measurements. )

Sorry yes I should have said circumference instead of diameter

I've just bought the corner clamp for mine which will be easier for my plastic frames and the cleaning kit too which will help me keep the screws lubricated and not squeek which I've noticed mine doing xxx
