Personally, I much prefer going one way, then the other, unless there are scattered crosses with big jumps. I like to watch tv while I'm stitching so it helps to do all the counting on the first direction then I can just stitch back and not have to worry whether it's the right amount or in the right place.

The more you do the more confident you get and you'll develop your own style and preferences.

I've been thinking of ways to describe the return row trip in cross stitch. How about this, which works if you are stitching and crossing as you go:

You have successfully completed the number of stitches you need on your row going from left to right. How do you return right to left and still have the crosses going in the same direction ?
Your natural inclination is to bring your needle up from the bottom right-hand corner on the return journey. DON'T. Instead, bring your needle up from the bottom left-hand corner and stitch diagonally into the top right-hand corner . Then, obviously you bring the needle up at the bottom right and cross, triumphantly, into the top left. Ta Da!
Your next stitch goes into the 'free' left-hand corner of the next stitch, and so on.

Thanks Serinde.

Thats how I had been doing it before. I have tried the style of doing one diagonal stitch all the way along and then coming back right to left and doing the opposite diagonal stitch and i like that way when im watching tv as Ekidna said. Doing a full cross as you go I find I need a bit more concentration, but I like both ways now!
