I just finished phase 1 of the needle case! Now I just need to put the bag together and sew the lining in. Here is the completed design:

I finished putting everything together last night and was so excited that I drove over to my sister's house so I could give it to her right away! There has been a slight change to the project - Katie requested that instead of making it a knitting needle case, I make it into a bag / purse so that she can use it more often and show it off more. So we added a strap so she can carry it around with her. Here is the finished product:
