Re: Everything Computers Bingo-Day 2 #'s are up!
Again, I’m relying heavily on Wikipedia for info (which is why I’m including links over to the specific pages) If no one has any complaints, I will most likely continue to use it as my research partner.
4 Atlas (computer)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_computer" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank
The Atlas Computer was a joint development between the University of Manchester, Ferranti, and Plessey. The first Atlas, installed at Manchester University and officially commissioned in 1962, was one of the world's first supercomputers, considered to be the most powerful computer in the world at that time. It was said that whenever Atlas went offline half of the United Kingdom's computer capacity was lost. It was a second-generation machine, using discrete germanium transistors. Two other Atlas machines were built: one for British Petroleum and the University of London, and one for the Atlas Computer Laboratory at Chilton near Oxford.
A derivative system was built by Ferranti for Cambridge University. Called the Titan, or Atlas 2, it had a different memory organization and ran a time-sharing operating system developed by Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Two further Atlas 2s were delivered: one to the CAD lab at Cambridge (later called CADCentre, then AVEVA), and the other to the Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston.
The University of Manchester's Atlas was decommissioned in 1971 but the last was in service until 1974. Parts of the Chilton Atlas are preserved by National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh.
11 E-mail
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank
Electronic mail, also known as email or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks. Some early email systems required that the author and the recipient both be online at the same time, in common with instant messaging. Today's email systems are based on a store-and-forward model. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages. Neither the users nor their computers are required to be online simultaneously; they need connect only briefly, typically to an email server, for as long as it takes to send or receive messages.
I have (personally) just recently begun using email for medical records. Both an evaluation my son had and a whole bunch of lab reports for me were sent through cyber-space. Part of me is a bit fearful that others may access it but then I think “what are they going to DO with it?â€
eta: I forgot to say, Queen Elizabeth sent her first email in the late 1970's, possibly as early as March of 1976.

Re: Everything Computers Bingo-Friday...very late!:
I am so sorry I’m late today! And on a FRIDAY of all days!!! So, when I had my son roll, I had him roll THREE times:
2 Apollo Guidance Computer
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer" target="_blank
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was a digital computer produced for the Apollo program that was installed onboard each Apollo Command Module (CM) and Lunar Module (LM). The AGC provided computation and electronic interfaces for guidance, navigation, and control of the spacecraft. The AGC had a 16-bit word length, with 15 data bits and one parity bit. Most of the software on the AGC was stored in a special read only memory known as core rope memory, fashioned by weaving wires through magnetic cores, though a small amount of read-write core memory was provided.
Astronauts communicated with the AGC using a numeric display and keypad called the DSKY. The AGC and its DSKY user interface were developed in the early 1960s for the Apollo program by the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory. The AGC is notable for being one of the first integrated circuit-based computers
7 Calculator watch
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculator_watch" target="_blank
A calculator watch is a watch with a calculator built into it. They have existed since the 1970s, and continue to be produced, though their heyday was the early to mid 1980s. The most notable brand is the Casio Databank series
On a personal note, I remember Christmas of 1981 when my brother received one as a gift. The paperwork with it BRAGGED that there was more computing power in that watch then was used to send the Apollo Astronauts to the moon…TOTAL coincidence that JR rolled both of those today!
10 Dr. Charles Stark Draper
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Stark_Draper" target="_blank
Charles Stark Draper (October 2, 1901 – July 25, 1987) was an American scientist and engineer, often referred to as "the father of inertial navigation." He was the founder and director of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, later renamed the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, which under his direction designed and built the Apollo Guidance Computer for NASA, which made the Apollo moon landings possible. Ok, now that’s just WEIRD! JR rolled this one first, 2 second & 7 third, but they are inter-related…..spooky!
