Oh, I know. there is nothing nicer than when someone appreciates the amount of time and effort and love and devotion that goes into a piece.

I have one particular girlfriend who 'gets it'. She is a fellow stitcher and whenever she comes over she admires my lighthouse and always says how proud she is that I stuck at it.

But mainly, people just don't get it.

Thank goodness I do it for the love and not the recognition nor appreciation ;)

Of your two choices I think the second one is more annoying. The first one only shows the person's ignorance of how to do cross stitch. The second comment is insulting about the process and the time you've spent on it.

What's annoying to me is partly my fault. I eat my lunch at my desk at work. I've told people that if I'm at my desk and someting came up that can't wait until after I'm back from lunch they can interrupt me. When I'm stitching I ask them to wait until I can finish a row or a stitch or two so I don't lose count but people have responded "it's just cross stitch you can recount later". That might be true but it's also my lunch hour and I would like a break too.
