D'you people remember tragedyact saying something about coloured charts? I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not, never having used or even seen one. BUT:

Now that I am doing the backstitching on this project I wish most profoundly that the different colours used in the backstitching were in colour on the chart! They sometimes interweave very closely and it's a bit of a puzzle sorting out what colour goes where. Colour coded backstitch on the charts would be a HUGE help! Why don't the designers do it? Ok, if you are using a single colour on the backstitch it doesn't matter a fig, but when you are using multiple colour backstitching, it makes a lot of sense, imo. :thinks:

So I'll try again and hope it doesn't come up as a double post...

Some backstitching done. Some of it shows! Just under the dragon's chin is a hopeless tangle of fingers and blue beardy bits. Hopeless. I'll have to try coming at it from the arm, but I doubt if it''ll make it any easier... sigh. Oh, for coloured backstitch on the charts! It'd be SO much easier!

Also note the eyelets in the corner motifs of the border. I had 'forgotten' these eyelets, cos I have never done 'em before and thought they would be difficult. They were a doddle, and they look so nice! All soft and cushiony and shiny. Love 'em!

I also have problem with the borders. They are clearly backstitched in the pictures on the chart cover, but NOT mentioned in the backstitch instructions. I could, of course, go to the Wentzler site and ask, but I think I'll just use my initiative and hazlenut!

Thanks for your comments, everyone! :D

He now has his head completed - and his eye looks so menacing, I'm a touch nervous about stitcking a needle into the rest of him!

As you can see, I finally managed to sort out fingets from blue frill - but it was really very tricky and involved a bit of frogging.

the "self-coloured" backstitching works so well, it makes it stand out but is still very subtle!

Thanks, everyone. :D I'm currently working on the borders which is time-consuming and a bit boring. As I mentioned, the chart didn't state the colour of the border backstitch, so I have experimented with DMC 3045, which is a bit too pale, and am currently trying DMC 610, which is a bit too dark. DMC 611 would probably be a better bet, but I only have a tiny bit of that left, and if I send for another skein I shall, naturally, be 'obliged' to purchase other colours that take my fancy! So I'm going to unpick the bit I did in 3045 - well, it''s more than a bit, actually - :anotherfrog: and continue in 610. It looks ok, just a bit darker than in the chart pic. All adds to the individualism of the piece!

These designs are very intricate, and the backstitch really makes them special.

I looked up the errata listing at her website, and you are correct to use DMC 610 for backstitching the border.
