Well, here is step one of my Hardanger experiment. I drew a simple design, and gave it a buttonhole edge; did the Algerian eyes in gold braid, and did the cutting.
The next step is to cut out the two motifs right next to the buttonhole stitch, then put them together back to back, and do the needleweaving through both layers, then whipstitch the buttonhole stitch edging together to make an ornament!

Well, here is step two -- and pretty nerve-racking it was too! I had to cut right to the edge of the buttonhole stitching, the first one was a bit experimental but by the time I was cutting the second I had found a comfortable way of working -- and I have finally found a use for those precision scissors I bought from Sttch Direct, they're perfect for this sort of thing!
The picture shows one of them from the front, and one from the back. Still quite a few red ends poking out even from the front, but I'll tidy that up later. I did miscount on two occasions with the buttonhole stitch, so i just hope

that that won't make the whole thing fall apart...

It is looking more and more intriguing. Can't wait to see how you proceed. Perhaps a step by step tutorial???

With my luck, I'd probably cut too deep and there goes all that hard work. Your stitching is so beautiful
