Pretty Christmas brooch, Mabel!
The black sweater shows it off well.

Re: Mabel's other stitching
In the same group on FB where someone posted that picot poinsettia, a lady posted a picture of a little felt Christmas Bunny ornament. I asked whether I could use it and she said yes, so meet Harry! He's a Christmas ornament for my daughter-in-law who had to say goodbye to her (grey) pet rabbit last month.
I couldn't tell from her picture whether hers was a single layer, or double-sided, but I decided to make Harry double-sided anyway. Some of it was a bit of a faff! Worth it though, I hope, although I will tell DIL that if having the ornament on her tree would just make her sad I would keep it and not be offended.
Oh, he's about 8cm tall.

Harry is adorable Mabel! It is always heartbreaking to lose a pet but to receive a thoughtful gift like this will hopefully be a happy reminder for your DIL.

Re: Mabel's other stitching
Garnet, if you know how to do woven picots (and I think Mary Corbet has a good instruction video on her site - she has good instruction videos for most things
) you can make this brooch (or keep it on the fabric and make it into a card, or an ornament, or whatever).
I started with the French knots because they help me get the scale right (I hadn't worked with this yarn before for embroidery, it's a four-ply crochet yarn): 1 in the middle, 6 around it in a circle. Then four red picot in a cross shape (I mean, pointing north east south west) very close to them. Now push the picots up so you can see the fabric underneath and do four more in the gaps (pointing north-east, south-east etc - sort of on the diagonal). Push those up as well and work four green picots, not too regularly distributed and showing up between the red petals.
To finish as a brooch, buttonhole stitch a small circle around the base of the poinsettia, then cut it out. Now I'll describe not what I did but what I should have done
:
Turn the poinsettia over so you're looking at the circle from the back. Fold the left and right side to the middle (sew together if you wish). Put a safety pin on top, horizontally (so positioned left to right) and fold the top and bottom flaps over it and secure. I'm going to FoF about this but here's a sneak preview of my diagram for it:
