Angel,
Despite what is widely seen, we do have work safety departments. Most companies have someone in charge of safety, plus there is an occupational safety and hazard administration (OSHA) that does inspections and investigations any time there is an accident. We do have the yahoos who will do work like what your dad saw...especially when there aren't supervisors/officials around. I got an e-mail one time that had pictures of all of these people doing dangerous things. One of them was a guy standing on a ladder that was up on some buckets so it would reacher higher. DH does home repair/remodel. I was

when he saw the pictures and said that he had done a couple of the things out of necessity!

Yeah, I think I cried when I realized that they were gone for good and not just out of stock. Like poptarts. How come I can only find pop tarts in morrisons?
Busy_B, my dad has worked in America a few times before and the standards in America are just a lot lower than European ones. The fact that a cherrypickers arm will even move at those angles is testament to it. But if you want more examples...Tunnels...American tunnels would never even be allowed to be built in Europe because of how few safety backups are in them. Rollercoasters. Again, American rollercoasters at their best would not pass our minimum safety requirements.
Something as simple as plugs. American plugs are dangerous! I can't remember half the reasons for why these things are dangerous, just the fact that they are.
The health and Safety in America is practically non existent compared to Europe. And that's even apparent in wiring! I mean the colours of the wires in low visibility are so similar it's so easy to get confused. Whereas they used to be unmistakably different over here. But the more American stuff coming into England the more American wiring we've got which just makes our wiring completly lethal. As The american live is our ground. So even though American wiring is bad, our wiring has become completely lethal.
It's just shocking because of the suing culture that seems to run rampant in America. We thought with a country so eager to sue each other they'd have really good safety standards, but there just isn't. There hasn't been for a good twenty years.
*shrugs* But maybe that's just because Europe is completely safety mad! Like you have to wear plastic gloves to do wiring...which is actually impossible. All I'm saying is that the lack of safety compared to European standards is shocking. But I'm also aware that european standards are so high that they make working really really hard.

Great progress!!
BTW, I know there's a lot lacking over here. I really do think that we need to have more safety standards, especially given all of the stupid mistakes that have resulted in loss of lives over the last several months. Thanks for all the info! I didn't realize there was that much of a difference. When I mentioned the cherrypicker to DH, he said that it was probably hot wired because ours have the same safety feature. I guess you learn something every day!

There is quite a bog culture difference apparently. I don't know most of it, but I do know that I won't be going in tunnels or on rollercoasters when I go to America. You know one roller coaster in America actually went final destination? (Came off the tracks and killed the people in it.) Granted that roller coaster was faulty and during the invistigation was found to have things that wouldn't have passed inspection, but when she was comparing it to how it needed to be to pass, I was shocked because it still wouldn't have passed ours.
I think America needs a few more safety rules and we need a few less. I wonder how you hotwire a cherry picker...?

Or why you'd want to...

Good progress so far

I can sorta make out the bunnys footsie!
And just thinking of being on a rollercoaster that comes off the tracks makes me feel giddy... I feel so sorry for those people

One of them was a teen about 17? I think the other was her mother or best friend. But they were both killed. The car set off up the hill the pully gave out and they went tearing backwards down the slope through the boarding part, round the final hairpin turn backwards at speeds never meant for that corner and went flying off of the track. The re-inaction alone was enough to make me slightly hysterical and I'm quite sure there was no one in the re-inaction, it was just close ups of what parts went wrong.
You can? YAY!!!!! I've not got the light blue I need atm, but I'll get that shortly.

weet yay
Angel has just ordered a magnetic board with magnetic squares to make following the chart easier. I had to frog all of the dark blue around the patch because I'd missed two lines T_T It's really hard doing a chart with no marking off.
