Re: Jocellogirl's stitching - Fleur de Lys Part one

Post by jocellogirl »

Thanks for all the lovely comments. I'm on part 6 of Fleur de Lys now, just haven't got round to updating though. Sorry
One thing I did take a photo of is Mabel's Official Stash-a-holic sampler, to be found a the bottom of this page.
Image
It is the perfect size for a little wooden box I got when I subscribed to a cross stitch magazine. I use it to keep all the threads for my WIPs in so I'm not rummaging around in my drawers for them. I've adapted it slightly, I replaced the buttons on the right with a copy of the little scissor keep I made at the Hardanger workshop with Mabel two years ago (my very first Hardanger  ) and I thought the French knots in the upper right would get squashed, as there is a quite snug fitting layer of perspex over the design, so I stitched a spool of Kreinik instead. I'm really pleased with how it has all turned out :D . Another gorgeous Mabel design

Inspired by the beautiful autumn colours at the moment, I have just started a brand new project. She is the sister of the Celtic Christmas at the start of this thread and is, of course, Celtic Autumn by Lavender and Lace.
This is the official colourway;
Image
but I am stitching her with the alternative colours, which I think are much more seasonal. I have had the stash for ages, but never seemed to get round to getting going on her.
I'm not going to put a picture of what those colours are, you'll have to see what they are as the piece develops!
Here's where I am after a couple of evenings and a bit of frogging :ribbit: :ribbit: :ribbit: :?
Image
I will try and update this regularly, so watch this space.
Thanks for looking :)

:applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce: Beautiful start!! She is going to be exquisite. I'd guess that one of the color changes is from shades of gold to shades of green? Since it looks like the sleeve is already a few shades of green. I am definitely looking forward to your updates!

There are times, like in this thread, when I look at what I have done and look at what other people do, and think 'Why do I even bother?'. The standard of your work is so high, Jocellogirl, it's almost discouraging.

I will say 'Keep it up', even though part of me is saying 'Noooo, don't, your work is so good it's dispiriting'.

Hrrumph.

Regards,

Richard.

Your start definitely suggests something more autumnal than the original colourway - looking forward to seeing golds and reds and oranges appear! (Oranges as in colour, of course. Not the fruit. That would just be silly :-))

Can I go into teacher mode and very very gently chide you, Richard? Jo's work is beautiful, and so is yours, and so is practically everything I see here, whether or not it's my taste and whether or not I'd ever do it myself.

Please don't go into comparisons, because I'm not sure you can compare people's stitching (unless they've all entered a competition and you're comparing certain technical or design points, I suppose) - each one is different, and each one is unique as it is made by a unique stitcher.

My work is mostly very small, and if I ever started comparing it with all the beautiful HAEDs and Scarlet Quinces and your own gorgeous honeymoon portrait, I might easily get discouraged; but small is what I do, and so the only thing I try to compare it with (if i compare at all) is my own work, and what I think I could do at my best - if it's the best I can do, and I like the look of it, then I'm happy :-)

Your stitching and the piece you have chosen are beautiful. I love it when someone makes a piece all their own by making changes to colors or to the pattern to make the piece their own.

Thank you for sharing. I am looking forward to more updates.
