Nope, not one bit of backstitch in these designs Faith. It's all done by shading.
I'm hoping the green will define the white more though, so it looks more part of it all.
I've made a start on the green, so we'll soon know!

Aw nuts.. well I think it will look ok without it.. but I dunno, it feels like there should be some backstitching to help define each petal... Or maybe backstitching is growing on me?

Backstitch can work wonders in the right place, but in designs like these I think it's lovely that all the shading is done with the cross stitch -- it reminds me of the old Berlin woolwork designs the Victorians used to be so fond of. I can see what you mean about the white, TB -- would it be possible (if you still don't like it when all the green's been finished) to take out the white and substitute a pale lilac? Trouble is you said 208 is the darkest shade so presumable the lightest one is 211? In which case i don't think there is a paler lilac
As you mentioned I hope the greens are helping to pull it all together. I can see what you mean about the white, but I also like Ali's thought of it being a strong highlight from sun, etc. Hope it all works out in the end!
I think I'm happy with it now the green leaves are in place.
The two together:
So I've now made a start on the yellow rose.
Just a small amount done, so I won't show a picture yet, but hopefully over the weekend I should have an update for you.
