Is there a rule when doing a cross stitch sampler pattern that you need to use the person's name stitched on the pattern or is it okay to replace it with your own name?

This has always bothered me and what is the correct thing to do especially when the pattern is one of the old more detailed patterns.

If you're doing it for someone else then you should probably put their name on it, but there's not reason you can't tack on "Stitched by X in the year XXXX" Or whatever along the top/bottom/edge.

My mother always put her initials and the year she stitched the sampler on it. That or she put our last name. Mom has done probably 20 or 30 samplers. That was her thing .

Unless the design is for someone else or the name is part of the actual design and wouldn't work without it, I always replace with my own initials/name and the year I stitched it.

I also do a much tinier version on gifts I stitch.

Why do I get the feeling that some of the new people who've signed up have been spammers/bots?

Just curious because I noticed the prevalent use of nonsensical smilies on our chat screen.

I agree Zeb.... I think that there a lot of spammers!

And I thought it was just my universal translator playing up.

I think we have gotten off course a bit from the original topic of signing and dating a sampler.
Thank you all for your input and I think after discussing this topic I will be signing my name and date accordingly. I want my samplers to be a legacy to my family so if I put someone else name on the samplers years from now they will have no idea who that person was - are they a relative or not. So for history sake I don't think there is any way not to put your own personalization on the piece you are working on.

Cyclonemom, I'm with you on this. I initial every piece and put the 2-digit year on as well, unless space permits the full 4 digits. I did a piece last year where there was something written in French, I believe, and an envelope-looking design were part of the actual pattern. I omitted that from my piece and simply filled the space in with another word and continued some of the decorative design from the lower left of the design. I also replaced the designers name (part of the pattern as well) with my own. Here's a link to the piece I'm talking about so you can better understand what I mean:
