The Elementals - HAED Update Feb. 3

I've recently started on my first HAED,
The Elementals.
I hope to get a pic posted this afternoon while the little ones are napping. I was getting a little discouraged on it yesterday until I looked at my stitching from a distance and realized that it really is starting to look like something.

Okay, here are some pics. The colors don't come through real well on them. I'll try playing with lighting and see if I can make them come through any better. Oh, and because I seem to be backwards from the rest of the world

I started at the bottom left corner.
It's been a little slow going so far. I guess I'm not used to a project with 14 colors in one 10x10 block

. Hopefully things will pick up once I get a rhythm going.

Wow, you've chosen a real challenge, Jo Wall's piece

I haven't had enough courage to start one of hers (I have one chart in my mind). And I've been stitching HAED's almost a year and a half. Good luck, just keep going. The result will be amazing I can guarantee that.

Lovely.

You have done a lot already.
I saw how you did your gridl. (I am having gridding issues). Do you pull the thread out as you cover a section? I did a mini grid on mine, which is okay for now since it is all one color for the first page.

I've always been one to jump into the deep end with both feet

. I fell in love with the design and didn't think about it probably being harder than others. At the rate I'm going it'll probably be somewhere between 5 and 7 years before it's finished, but I'll get there eventually.

I am pulling the thread out as I go for two reasons. First, I just used regular cotton sewing thread to grid with and I was have issues getting it to slide out nicely. Secondly, I'm stitching 2 over 1 and I don't have room in the holes for the gridding thread. This is the first time I've ever gridded anything and I'm not sure if I'm sold on the idea completely yet, but I'll keep with it since I spent 2 weeks putting it in. Maybe I'll change my mind once I get further into the project.

Just out of interest, do you do your parking row by row or block by block? I'm trying to decide which to use for my Coniferous Forest. Row by row is very slow going but the stitches are neater, and block by block is a lot faster but creates gaps which make it difficult to insert stitches afterwards. Hmmm ... decisions, decisions ...

I have been doing the parking block by block, but I think I'm going to change how I do it. I've ended up with so many colors parked that they're starting to annoy me. I think I'm now going to try just finishing off each color either until there are no more reachable stitches or until I use up the thread on the needle (if that makes sense). I don't know if I'll like that method any better, but I'll try.
