"Cat Sampler" UPDATE #1

I started this today and wanted to share. This is from Lila's Studio. I love the cats and the colors, although I have replaced some of the pinks with purples and oranges. It's on Rit dyed 32-ct linen. I used Kelly Green Rit watered down to make this light green. It's not quite as yellowish as the pic indicates.

Who is it that did The Nest on that bright limey green fabric? I love it and that was my inspiration for my color choice with this.

Great start! And congrats on the fabric! I believe it was Maggie that did "Nest" on that bright green fabric.

Thanks everyone! I've been doing my own linen dye jobs for a long time. It's really easy.

Do you use white linen, or natural and just how easy is it?

I intended to come back and explain how to dye linen. I was in a hurry earlier.

I simply fill my kitchen sink (it's stainless steel) about a third of the way with hot water. I add in less Rit than I think I'll need, maybe a tablespoon, and stir it well. I then pre-rinse the linen in running water and squeeze out by hand. I stir the dye again and dip the linen in and slosh it around. I pull it out and check the color and add more dye if need be. If the color is okay I squeeze out the linen, rinse, squeeze it again, and allow to dry.

The only problem I have is all that squeezing wrinkles it and it takes forever to iron out. I always forget that. I think if I let it dry only a bit then ironed it while it was still damp it'd work out a lot better.

I don't bother with salt nor letting the linen sit in the dye. It seems to take the dye immediately just fine.

You know, I think I'll post this in the Tips forum later too. It's a lot of fun, especially if you don't want to wait around for dyed linen in the mail. I also don't see why you couldn't dye Aida.

Very nice!
The cat reminds me of ours (the same colours) - he has his favourite chair and always looks so proud when he sits there :)
