Running out of room on fabric

Hi there! This is my first post on this forum, & I need some advice from the experts. I've been stitching (off & on) for about 18 years & I've really messed up my current project. It's a Christmas stocking & after working on it for about 3 weeks, I've realized that I mis-read the center/starting point & I'm about 20 rows lower on the fabric than I need to be. As a result, I'm going to run out of room. I don't have room on my current fabric to stitch the bottom 15 rows of the toe of the stocking on the fabric (plus I need 1/2 inch for seam allowance).

So, any thoughts? My mom suggested piecing another piece of fabric (Ivory Aida 14 count), but I have no idea how to do that. Any suggestions on how to do that? Or, any other suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Use another piece of the same fabric and lay it under the current piece of fabric. Begin stitching over both pieces. These stitches will secure the added piece to the larger, already stitched, piece. Then just stitch as you normally would. There may be a bit of a seam when the larger piece runs out, but for a stocking it might not be noticable.
